Job Overview: The Microbiologist position is part of an anticipated project aimed at strengthening the TB diagnostic network in Bangladesh. This role is contingent upon the award of the project and will be based in Regional TB Reference Laboratories (RTRLs). The Microbiologist will work under the supervision of the TB Laboratory Systems Advisor and will be responsible for ensuring that project technical deliverables are implemented efficiently and effectively. The position will focus primarily on public health systems, but may also involve private health and non-governmental diagnostic facilities. The role requires frequent in-country travel to various laboratories and health facilities to provide technical assistance and support systems strengthening interventions at the sub-national level. The overarching goal of this position is to enhance the capacity for advanced diagnostic testing and improve the overall TB diagnostic network in Bangladesh, thereby contributing to the reduction of TB transmission and bolstering global health security.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Microbiologist will have a range of responsibilities, including providing technical oversight and hands-on support for TB diagnostic services, which encompass molecular tests such as GeneXpert and LPA, as well as culture and drug susceptibility testing (DST). They will ensure the implementation and maintenance of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in accordance with national standards and ISO 15189 principles. Monitoring laboratory performance indicators, supporting corrective actions, and conducting regular supportive supervision and mentoring visits to linked laboratories are also key duties. The Microbiologist will identify nonconformities during audits, document findings, and assist in developing and following up on Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) plans. Strengthening sample referral and transportation systems, ensuring biosafety practices, and collaborating with technical staff on project workplans are essential aspects of the role. Additionally, they will support laboratory data reporting through eLMIS/dashboard systems, maintain proper documentation, coordinate with the National TB Reference Laboratory, and contribute to training and coaching laboratory staff on TB diagnostics and data management. The Microbiologist will also participate in relevant technical meetings and contribute to periodic technical reports for project monitoring.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of a BSc in clinical diagnostics or an equivalent degree with a specialty in microbiology, particularly with a strong focus on tuberculosis. A minimum of four years of direct experience in TB diagnostic network strengthening and laboratory capacity building in Bangladesh is required. Candidates should demonstrate competency in current diagnostic methods for TB and have knowledge and experience in strengthening laboratories to meet international quality standards. Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory, and candidates should be willing and able to travel at least 50% of the time within Bangladesh.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in clinical diagnostics or a related field, with a specialization in microbiology. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of TB diagnostics and laboratory management.
Experience: The position requires at least four years of relevant experience in TB diagnostic network strengthening and laboratory capacity building. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in laboratory settings, particularly in the context of tuberculosis diagnostics, and should be familiar with the challenges and requirements of laboratory operations in Bangladesh.
