Job Overview: The expert in GHG projections and mitigation will play a crucial role in supporting the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) project in Zambia. This position involves close coordination with the National ICAT team leadcoordinator and requires the expert to provide technical input and support for the completion of project deliverables. The expert will be responsible for elaborating and submitting reports and deliverables, ensuring compliance with the workplan, and collaborating with other ICAT team members. The role emphasizes the importance of building national capacities for GHG emissions projections and tracking the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The expert will also engage with national authorities and stakeholders to ensure the technical quality and timely submission of all deliverables, contributing to the overall objectives of the ICAT project.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the GHG projections and mitigation expert include:
Collaborating with the ICAT local team lead and other experts to ensure effective execution of project activities.
Engaging with national authorities and stakeholders to support the technical quality of deliverables.
Providing technical input for GHG emissions projections and mitigation scenario development.
Identifying and analyzing selected policies and measures under key NDC sectors to estimate their GHG emissions reduction potential.
Developing and enhancing data management frameworks for GHG emissions projections.
Monitoring and tracking the implementation of NDC mitigation actions.
Applying Sustainable Development (SD) methodologies for NDC tracking.
Preparing reports and documentation for validation workshops and stakeholder consultations. 1
Ensuring compliance with the deliverables and timelines set forth in the workplan.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for this position include:
An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in natural or social sciences, or a Bachelor’s degree with two additional years of relevant experience.
A minimum of 5 years of proven working experience in climate/environment protection.
At least 10 years of experience with diverse GHG projections methodologies and tools, particularly those used for climate planning and reporting under the Paris Agreement.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in identifying mitigation policies and measures and modeling GHG mitigation scenarios.
Proven experience in working with international development projects and engaging with national and local stakeholders related to climate mitigation.
Demonstrated experience in GHG emission accounting and preparation of national communications and biennial update reports is an added advantage.
Knowledge of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, 2019 Refinements to the 2016 IPCC guidelines, and good practice guidelines is essential.
Excellent knowledge of climate change policy and processes is required.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as environmental science, climate change, or social sciences. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree combined with two years of additional relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of climate change and environmental protection.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of proven working experience in climate/environment protection, with at least 10 years of experience in diverse GHG projections methodologies and tools. Candidates should have a strong background in identifying mitigation policies and measures, modeling GHG mitigation scenarios, and working with international development projects. Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not explicitly required.
Additional Notes: The position is part-time and expected to last for 9 months. The consultant will work closely with the UNEP CCC Project Coordinator, who will supervise the technical aspects of the role and ensure compliance with deliverables. International travel may or may not be required for this consultancy.
