Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
Extending big-data methodologies to new geographic regions to study spatio-temporal dynamics between human activities and the environment.
Processing and integrating large-scale geospatial datasets, including mobile device location data, vessel AIS data, and satellite-derived environmental variables.
Conducting research to adapt and optimize existing analysis pipelines for regional generalization, focusing on computational efficiency and hyperparameter tuning.
Applying advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques to derive actionable insights into human behaviors and environmental systems.
Analyzing model outputs and derived data to validate findings and interpret patterns.
Contributing to the development and documentation of a reusable Python package for future research.
Synthesizing and reporting findings to project consultants and supervisors through regular updates and presentations.
Authoring a complete technical paper detailing the methodology, results, and implications of the study for publication or internal dissemination.
Performing any other tasks assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a master's degree or PhD program in Data Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Economics, Econometrics, or related fields. They should have completed graduate-level coursework in data analysis, statistics, machine learning, and/or environmental science. Strong analytical skills and experience in programming languages are essential. The ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team is also required. A demonstrated interest in environmental issues and a desire to make a positive impact are important attributes for candidates. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory.
