Job Overview:
The Associate Director position within the Environment and Sustainability Department at the EBRD is a pivotal role that focuses on the implementation of the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy commitments. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing environmental and social monitoring across various projects in Türkiye and the Caucasus region. This role requires a proactive approach to conducting on-site monitoring of complex, high-risk projects, analyzing trends, and ensuring compliance with environmental and social standards. The Associate Director will also engage with key stakeholders, including government representatives and civil society organizations, to foster productive relationships that support project success. This position is critical for driving continuous improvement in monitoring processes and ensuring that the Bank's commitments are met effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Director will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: managing and overseeing complex and high-risk projects, providing specialist input and oversight, conducting environmental and social appraisals, and ensuring compliance with the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy. The role involves coordinating tasks and outputs, conducting analytical reviews, and developing methodologies for monitoring and reporting. The Associate Director will also represent the ESD at various meetings and events, contribute to capacity-building initiatives, and mentor junior staff. Additionally, the position requires managing engagement with internal and external stakeholders, preparing sustainability-related reports, and championing the Bank's behavioral competencies and corporate behaviors.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, along with a proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks. Knowledge of international environmental and social standards, financing instruments, and policy development is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, effective time management, and the ability to work independently or lead a team in a multicultural environment are also required. Excellent written and spoken English is mandatory, and familiarity with a language of the EBRD's countries of operation is advantageous.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Comparable professional experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates should have a strong understanding of environmental and social appraisal processes and standards, as well as experience in project management and oversight.

Experience:
The position requires significant experience in managing complex and high-risk projects, with a focus on environmental and social impacts. Candidates should have a track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams and delivering solutions in challenging environments. Experience in negotiating and communicating complex policy issues to senior stakeholders is also essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and familiarity with a language spoken in the EBRD's countries of operation is considered advantageous. For resident office appointments, local language fluency will be required to facilitate effective communication with stakeholders.

This is a fixed-term contract for a duration of 2 years, based in Istanbul, with frequent travel required (up to 50%) within Türkiye and the Caucasus region.
