Job Overview:
The Social Media Specialist will play a crucial role in enhancing UNEP’s social media channels by creating consistent, high-quality, and engaging content that aligns with the organization’s mandate and priorities. The position involves improving the performance, reach, and engagement of UNEP’s social media platforms through strategic content planning and data-driven optimization. The incumbent will report to the Head of the Social Media Unit within UNEP’s Communication Division and will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing dynamic social media content strategies for various campaigns, including the year-long World Environment Day campaign. Daily community management of UNEP’s global social media channels will also be a key responsibility, ensuring that the content resonates with diverse audiences and promotes environmental awareness effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Social Media Specialist will undertake a variety of duties, including: planning and developing interactive social media content strategies; producing compelling content for platforms such as X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, BlueSky, and TikTok; designing visual content assets like social media cards and reels; scheduling and proofreading social media content for accuracy; monitoring and moderating social media channels; conducting editorial planning with colleagues managing UNEP’s Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian channels; tracking key performance indicators for social media efforts; and identifying new opportunities to enhance UNEP’s digital presence and deepen audience engagement.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, marketing" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">digital marketing, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience managing social media channels is required, along with stellar social copywriting and editing skills. The ability to translate technical information into clear and engaging content for broad public audiences is essential. Experience with social media scheduling tools and design tools such as Canva and Adobe Suite is also required. Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask are necessary for success in this role. Previous experience with a multilateral or international/UN organization is desirable.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, digital marketing, or a related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for effective communication and content creation in a global context.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in managing social media channels. This experience should include a proven track record of developing and implementing successful social media strategies, as well as familiarity with various social media platforms and tools.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
