Job Overview: The Senior Community-Based Protection Assistant plays a crucial role within the Protection Unit of UNHCR, primarily focusing on community engagement and protection strategies in the Azraq district of Jordan. This position requires the incumbent to spend a significant amount of time interacting with the community, building and maintaining networks with persons of concern (PoC) and partners. The role involves identifying risks faced by the community and leveraging their capacities to enhance their protection. The Assistant will support the application of community-based protection standards and operational procedures, ensuring that the protection needs of various demographic groups, including women, children, and marginalized communities, are addressed. The position demands a proactive approach to community engagement, requiring the Assistant to facilitate consultations with PoC to inform protection strategies and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Community-Based Protection Assistant include assisting functional units and senior management in integrating community-based approaches into the overall protection strategy. The Assistant will maintain relationships with PoC and partners to stay informed about political, social, and cultural developments that impact the protection environment. They will support initiatives that involve national civil society groups in protecting PoC and help displaced and local communities develop community-owned activities addressing various concerns, including education, health, and child protection. The Assistant will also conduct participatory assessments, support the establishment of community representation structures, and ensure that communities understand UNHCR's commitment to accountability. Additionally, the Assistant will collect data for monitoring programs, draft correspondence and reports, act as an interpreter, and enforce compliance with global protection policies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma or 1 year of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Essential qualifications include knowledge of UNHCR administrative rules and procedures, computer literacy, and community-based protection principles. Strong communication skills with partners, government, and community stakeholders are also required. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to UNHCR's core values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a High School Diploma as a minimum, with a preference for candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree in fields such as Development, Human Rights, law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">International Law, Social Work, Social Science, or Political Science. Relevant certifications in community development or social work are also advantageous.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position is at least 2 years of relevant experience for candidates with a High School Diploma, or 1 year of relevant work experience for those with a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Experience in community engagement, protection work, or related fields is highly desirable, particularly in challenging environments such as refugee camps.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic is mandatory for this position, as it is essential for effective communication with the community. Strong proficiency in English is also required for coordination and reporting purposes. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
