The Canada High Commission in Nairobi serves as the largest diplomatic mission of Canada in Africa, established in 1963 when Canada recognized Kenya's independence. The mission is not only responsible for bilateral relations with Kenya but also extends its diplomatic efforts to Somalia and Uganda, as well as engaging with international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme and UN-Habitat. The High Commission aims to promote Canadian interests and values, including international development cooperation and support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position offers a unique opportunity to engage with the Canada High Commission in Nairobi, focusing on the production of professional editorial graphics for various projects funded by the Canadian government. The role is designed for individuals interested in international development and cooperation, particularly in the context of the SDGs. Volunteers will work under the guidance of the CFLI Coordinator, contributing to the visual representation of 19 distinct projects for the 2025-2026 funding cycle. This position allows for the development of graphic design skills while supporting Canada's diplomatic mission in East Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Online Volunteer include the creation of 19 professional editorial graphics that adhere to a unified style, ensuring consistency across all visual materials. This involves:
  • Designing graphics that reflect the common 'look and feel' style as specified by the High Commission.
  • Incorporating feedback through up to two rounds of revisions based on consolidated comments from the High Commission.
  • Preparing final, publication-ready files that meet the Government of Canada’s specifications for both print and web formats.
  • Delivering print-ready and web-optimized PDF files, along with open design files, ensuring all materials are suitable for various platforms and audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a strong understanding of graphic design principles and experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign). Familiarity with social media content creation and an eye for detail are essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and incorporate feedback effectively. A passion for international development and a commitment to the values of the United Nations and Canada’s diplomatic mission are highly desirable.

Educational Background:
A background in graphic design, visual arts, communications, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have completed or be in the process of completing a degree or diploma in a relevant area, showcasing their skills and knowledge in design and visual communication.

Experience:
While prior experience in graphic design is beneficial, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should demonstrate a portfolio of previous work that highlights their design capabilities and creativity. Experience in volunteer roles or internships related to international development or graphic design will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and submissions will be conducted in English. Knowledge of French or other languages relevant to the region may be considered an advantage, enhancing the volunteer's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This is an online volunteer position, allowing for flexible working hours and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects from anywhere. The duration of the assignment is not specified, but it is expected to align with the timeline of the 2025-2026 project funding cycle. The role is part-time, and candidates should be prepared to manage their time effectively to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work.
