Job Overview: The National Consultant for the Comprehensive Multipurpose Agro-Market and Market Livelihood Opportunities Assessment is tasked with conducting a thorough assessment of agro-market conditions and livelihood opportunities in Somalia, specifically in the context of the Juba Climate-smart Agro-Market Project. This role is crucial for understanding the current market dynamics and identifying potential areas for improvement and investment. The consultant will be expected to engage with local stakeholders, analyze market data, and provide actionable recommendations that align with UNDP's mission of promoting sustainable development. The assignment is set for a period of 22 working days over two months, during which the consultant will gather data, conduct interviews, and compile findings into a comprehensive report that will inform future interventions in the agro-market sector.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the current agro-market landscape in Somalia, focusing on market access, supply chains, and livelihood opportunities.
Engaging with local farmers, market vendors, and other stakeholders to gather qualitative and quantitative data.
Analyzing market trends and identifying barriers to market access for local producers.
Developing recommendations for enhancing market livelihoods and improving the overall agro-market framework.
Preparing a detailed report summarizing findings, insights, and recommendations, which will be presented to UNDP and relevant stakeholders.
Collaborating with UNDP staff and other consultants to ensure alignment with project goals and objectives.
Participating in meetings and workshops to discuss findings and gather feedback from stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in agricultural economics, market analysis, or a related field. They should have proven experience in conducting market assessments, particularly in developing countries. Familiarity with the Somali context and understanding of local agricultural practices will be highly advantageous. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent communication skills to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: A minimum of a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics, Development Studies, or a related field is required. Candidates with a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area will be given preference. Relevant certifications in market analysis or project management will also be considered an asset.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of professional experience in market assessment, agricultural development, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of UNDP or similar agencies, will be beneficial. Candidates should also have a track record of successfully completing similar assignments in challenging environments.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Somali or other local languages will be considered a significant advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the quality of the assessment.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as a national consultant role, and the contract duration is for 22 working days over a two-month period. The consultant is expected to work remotely and may need to travel within Somalia as required for stakeholder engagement.
