Job Overview:
The UNFPA Driver plays a crucial role in providing reliable and safe driving services to UN officials and visitors, ensuring high standards of discretion and integrity. The Driver is responsible for maintaining the assigned vehicle in excellent working condition, logging mileage, and tracking fuel consumption. This position requires a client-oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, and the ability to work with individuals from diverse national and cultural backgrounds. The Driver will transport authorized personnel, deliver and collect mail and documents, and assist in various logistical functions. The role also involves maintaining internal contacts with UNFPA staff and collaborating with other drivers, as well as interacting with national and international partners. The Driver reports directly to the Logistics and Supply Associate and is expected to uphold the values and mission of UNFPA while performing their duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver is responsible for the following duties:
  • Driving office vehicles for the transport of UN staff, officials, and visitors, as well as for the delivery and collection of mail, documents, and other items.
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, including arranging visa and customs formalities when required.
  • Performing a high number of trips in programmatic settings for the Programme Team.
  • Ensuring cost-savings through proper vehicle use by maintaining accurate daily vehicle logs and providing inputs for vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Conducting day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle, including timely minor repairs, arranging major repairs, changing oil, checking tires, brakes, and water levels, and keeping the vehicle clean and in good running condition.
  • Ensuring the availability of all required documents and supplies in the vehicle, including insurance, registration, logs, office directory, city map, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
  • Keeping track of insurance and tax formalities.
  • Taking necessary steps in case of an accident, as per rules and regulations.
  • Assisting office staff with filing, photocopying, and maintaining stores when required. 1
  • Assisting in mailing and distribution of newsletters and publications and arranging payment of office bills as needed. 1
  • Performing other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must meet the following qualifications:
  • Completed Secondary Level education.
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience as a driver, with a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Working experience in an international organization, embassy, or UN is an asset.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol, local roads, and conditions.
  • Proficiency in current office software applications and corporate IT systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Certification in defensive driving and armored vehicle operation is an asset.
  • Experience in driving 4x4 vehicles and knowledge of communication equipment such as radio and GPS is an asset.
  • Knowledge in minor vehicle repairs is an asset. 1
  • Additional years of experience as a driver are an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is the completion of Secondary Level education. This foundational education is essential for understanding the responsibilities and tasks associated with the role of a driver in a professional environment, particularly within an international organization such as UNFPA.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience as a driver. This experience should include a valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record. Experience working in international organizations, embassies, or UN agencies is considered an asset, as it indicates familiarity with the protocols and expectations of driving in a diplomatic or international context.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken Romanian is mandatory, along with a working knowledge of English. Additionally, knowledge of one or more languages relevant to Moldova, such as Russian, Bulgarian, Gagauzian, Romani, Ukrainian, or sign language, would be considered an asset. This multilingual capability is important for effective communication in a diverse working environment.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time role under a Local Service Contract (LSC) at level LSC-
  • The expected starting date for this position is April 1, 2026, with an initial duration of 9 months and the possibility of extension. The Driver will be expected to work closely with the UNFPA Logistics and Supply Associate and will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the assigned vehicle. The role requires a commitment to professionalism, discretion, and integrity while working in a multicultural environment.
