Job Overview: The Communication Officer will play a vital role in supporting the UNFPA Sudan Country Office by implementing the communication strategy and ensuring donor visibility. This position involves amplifying the voices of women and girls through the creation of compelling media products and human-interest stories. The Communication Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Communication Specialist, contributing to the overall mission of UNFPA by ensuring consistent branding and effective coordination with implementing partners. The role requires a proactive approach to communication, advocacy, and media engagement, focusing on the organization's thematic mandate areas. The officer will also be responsible for maintaining relationships with national stakeholders and media, ensuring that UNFPA's work in Sudan is effectively communicated to various audiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative Support: Provide comprehensive administrative support to the Communications Unit, including managing contracts, workflows, and budgetary tools. Assist in financial management and budgeting as needed, and provide logistical support for missions, events, and outreach activities related to corporate communications.
Communication and Advocacy Strategies: Prepare, update, and post content on corporate websites and social media channels. Coordinate communication efforts at the field level and contribute to drafting and editing articles, press releases, and advocacy materials. Assist in implementing UNFPA Sudan Communication SOPs and develop relationships with stakeholders to support communication strategies.
Media Campaigns: Design and implement media campaigns aligned with UNFPA’s thematic areas. Produce visual materials for publications and presentations, draft talking points for senior management, and document UNFPA’s impact through high-quality communication materials.
Donor Visibility: Ensure appropriate visibility for donor contributions in compliance with UNFPA guidelines. Assist in creating tailored communication products for various donor requirements.
Reporting: Draft reports, situation reports, and newsletters for various offices, ensuring that UNFPA's work is well-documented and communicated effectively.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proven ability to draft and edit high-quality content for various platforms. Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media management is essential. The candidate should demonstrate creativity and adaptability in developing communication strategies and materials. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously are crucial. The candidate should also have a good understanding of gender issues and the importance of sexual and reproductive health in development contexts.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in communication strategies, media relations, or advocacy will be considered an asset. Knowledge of UNFPA's mission and objectives, as well as familiarity with the socio-political context of Sudan, will enhance the candidate's effectiveness in this role.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of humanitarian or development work, is highly desirable. Familiarity with media relations and advocacy strategies will be beneficial for this position.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Arabic is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and media. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the selected candidate will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position offers a monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of 1597.24 USD, along with a Danger and Hardship Differential (DHD) of 5750.1 USD. National UN Volunteers are entitled to annual and learning leaves, as well as free medical and life insurance. The role is full-time, and candidates should be prepared to engage actively with the local community and stakeholders.
