Job Overview: The Senior Economist position at the World Bank Group is a pivotal role that involves leading economic policy dialogue with government counterparts in Kazakhstan. The successful candidate will provide thought leadership and strategic advice on core economic policy issues, working closely with the Lead Economist. The Senior Economist will also be responsible for advising teams on Development Policy Operations and other lending operations that focus on economic policy and institutional reforms. The position demands a strong analytical background, as the Senior Economist will lead core diagnostics and economic reports, serve as a spokesperson on economic issues, and support the analytical work program of the Country Management Unit (CMU). Duties and Responsibilities: As part of the ECA Fiscal Policy and Growth unit, the Senior Economist will:
Lead the economic policy dialogue with government counterparts in Kazakhstan.
Provide thought leadership and advice to the CMU on core economic policy issues, working closely with the Lead Economist.
Coordinate macroeconomic policy dialogue with the IMF and other development partners.
Advise teams on Development Policy Operations or other lending operations focused on economic policy and institutional reforms.
Lead and/or advise teams on core diagnostics and economic reports.
Serve as the focal point or spokesperson on economic issues to clients and external constituencies.
Support the analytical work program of the CMU, including the preparation of Country Partnership Frameworks (CPFs) and other strategic documents.
Collaborate with other Global Practices on key strategic pieces and engagements.
Mentor and coach FPG colleagues in delivering the practice’s work program.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Senior Economist position must possess a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in economics, along with at least twelve years of relevant professional experience. They should have a proven track record of delivering high-quality analytical and advisory products, demonstrating strong analytical skills in macroeconomics, fiscal management, microeconomics, finance, and development economics. In-depth knowledge of World Bank Group financing operations and analytical services is essential, as is experience in leading high-impact development policy operations. Candidates should exhibit strong client orientation, leadership in teamwork, and the ability to work flexibly across various assignments. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to present complex analyses to non-specialist audiences.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in economics. This advanced education is crucial for understanding complex economic theories and applying them to real-world scenarios, particularly in the context of development economics and fiscal policy.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of twelve years of relevant professional experience. This experience should include a strong operational background in macroeconomic policy, fiscal management, and development economics, with a focus on delivering high-impact work in countries undergoing economic transformation. Previous experience in leading development policy operations and engaging with government counterparts is highly desirable.
