Job Overview: The scientist" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Data Scientist position is crucial for supporting UNEP's digital transformation efforts by utilizing internal and external data for evidence-based decision-making. The role involves analyzing trends, current data, and predictions to accelerate and scale environmental sustainability initiatives. The Data Scientist will work within the Chief Digital Office, reporting to the Chief Digital Officer and the Head of Applications, AI, and Data Science. The position requires a strong understanding of data analysis and the ability to develop predictive data science products, such as visualizations and AI/ML algorithms, to support UNEP's mission. The incumbent will also be responsible for liaising with technology stakeholders, promoting data science solutions, and engaging in complex research and analyses to develop impactful data products.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Data Scientist will be responsible for studying and evaluating new and existing data sources for their effectiveness and accuracy in decision-making. They will provide data-driven recommendations to stakeholders, develop and implement assigned programs, and monitor their development. The role includes designing and building predictive data science products, liaising with technology stakeholders for necessary infrastructure, and promoting the use of data science solutions. The Data Scientist will also develop tools to validate the effectiveness of data science products, engage in complex research, oversee resource allocation for analysis and reporting, and coordinate with functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes. Additionally, they will develop processes to monitor model performance and conduct full data analytics lifecycle analysis.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of the data analysis lifecycle, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to convey complex data science topics in a relatable manner. They should demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, client orientation, and performance management skills. The ideal candidate will take pride in their work, show persistence in overcoming challenges, and be committed to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in data science, computer science, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in data science is required. Candidates should have experience using data to advance decisions and strategies, managing small teams, and working on international multi-agency projects, ideally in an environmental context. Familiarity with data science tools such as Jupyter, Matlab, Knime, SPSS, SAS, or programming languages like R, Python, and Javascript is desirable. Experience contributing to technical publications in AI or data science and building AI/data models for environmental applications is also desirable.
Languages: English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is desirable, also at UN Level II proficiency.
