Job Overview: The intern will be positioned within the Planning, Finance & Economy Section of the Global Solutions Division at UN-Habitat in Nairobi. This role is crucial for supporting the agency's mission to promote sustainable urban development through effective planning and finance strategies. The intern will engage in various activities aimed at mainstreaming gender and inclusion in urban development, conducting research, and assisting in the development of reports and strategies that align with international frameworks. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant urban initiatives and gain hands-on experience in the field of urban planning and regeneration.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of the Public Space and Urban Regeneration teams. Specific duties include: supporting the Planning and Finance Section in integrating gender and inclusion into sustainable urban development; conducting desk and field research on urban development topics; assisting in the creation of tailored reports and methodologies; developing training materials for urban professionals; producing project proposals and advocacy materials; supporting the establishment of networks for knowledge sharing; and assisting in preparations for the World Urban Forum 13, including event logistics and communication efforts. The intern may also be assigned additional duties as necessary.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program, be in the final year of a first university degree program, or have graduated with a relevant degree. Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, is required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and possess the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Strong graphic representation skills and experience with design tools such as Adobe Suite and AutoCAD are desirable. Effective report writing and editing skills in English are essential, and knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a background in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Urban Policy, Human Geography, Social Sciences, or a related field that supports sustainable urban development. Applicants must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree, or enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. A strong academic foundation in relevant subjects is crucial for success in this internship.
Experience: While previous professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have a field of study closely related to urban planning and development. Experience in urban planning and design, particularly with skills in drawing, mapping, and preparing graphical materials, will be beneficial. Familiarity with digital communication strategies and social media platforms is also valued, as it enhances the intern's ability to contribute to the organization's outreach efforts.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this internship position. Knowledge of French or another UN language is considered desirable and will enhance the candidate's profile, given the multilingual nature of the United Nations.
Additional Notes: This internship is hybrid, based in Nairobi, Kenya, and is expected to last for six months. Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
