Job Overview:
The Economist position within the World Bank's Poverty and Equity Global Practice is crucial for contributing to the analytical and operational programs in Brazil. The selected candidate will be an integral part of the Poverty team, focusing on identifying and assessing policy issues related to poverty, welfare, and labor markets. The role requires effective communication of findings and insights to various stakeholders, including Bank counterparts and country management units. The economist will utilize Brazilian microdata and World Bank instruments to conduct comprehensive analyses, employing up-to-date methodologies to address distributional issues. Additionally, the role involves supporting the implementation and maintenance of microsimulation tools for poverty projections and the dissemination of analytical findings through various formats, including research papers and presentations. The position emphasizes collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and the ability to adapt to changing needs while prioritizing tasks effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Economist include:
  • Identifying and assessing policy issues related to poverty and equity, and effectively communicating findings in both written and verbal formats.
  • Developing strong working relationships with the Bank’s counterparts, country management units, and other Global Practices within the World Bank Group.
  • Leading the integration of poverty and equity insights into the Bank’s dialogue and operational strategies.
  • Conducting in-depth poverty, welfare, and labor market analyses using various data sources, including Brazilian microdata and World Bank instruments.
  • Supporting the implementation, updating, and maintenance of microsimulation tools to project poverty levels and analyze the distributional impact of policy changes.
  • Disseminating analytical findings through research papers, policy notes, presentations, and workshops, and training Bank counterparts on analytical tools and methodologies.
  • Collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills in a diverse and multicultural environment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in economics, statistics, or a related field, demonstrating strong analytical and quantitative skills. A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Candidates should have outstanding analytical skills, particularly in poverty, inequality, and labor markets, as well as expertise in econometrics and quantitative analysis of household surveys, including panel data. Proficiency in programming with Stata is essential. A clear understanding of the policy-making process and the World Bank's role in development is also necessary. Candidates should be highly motivated, adaptable, and capable of prioritizing tasks effectively.

Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced degree, either a Master’s or a Ph.D., in economics, statistics, or other related disciplines. This educational background should be complemented by strong analytical and quantitative skills, which are critical for the role.

Experience:
The Economist position requires at least five years of relevant professional experience. This experience should ideally include work in poverty analysis, labor markets, and econometrics, as well as familiarity with quantitative analysis of household surveys. Candidates with a combination of education and experience that meets or exceeds this requirement will also be considered.

Languages:
Full proficiency in Portuguese and English is mandatory for this position.
