Job Overview:
The GIS Specialist position at UNFPA Somalia involves supporting the Somali National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS) in enhancing the availability of demographic data through spatial analysis and mapping. The role is crucial for improving real-time monitoring and communication of data insights, which are essential for effective policy and planning. The GIS Specialist will work closely with the UNFPA team and the SNBS GIS Specialist to develop spatial models, produce maps, and build capacity within the local statistical office. This position requires a strong technical background in GIS and data management, as well as the ability to conduct complex spatial analyses and create visual representations of data.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the SNBS GIS Specialist to support spatial modeling and map production.
  • Acquire, clean, and manage various types of spatial data, including vector, raster, and satellite images.
  • Conduct spatial analysis, including modeling, clustering, hotspot analysis, and interpolation to identify demographic patterns.
  • Create static and thematic maps, as well as interactive web maps using GIS software such as QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online.
  • Provide training and capacity building for local staff on GIS techniques and data management practices.
  • Assist in the development of methodologies for data collection and analysis to improve the quality of demographic data.
  • Ensure that all spatial data is accurately documented and stored in accordance with UNFPA standards.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in GIS and spatial analysis, with a strong portfolio of previous work.
  • Proficiency in GIS software, particularly QGIS and ArcGIS.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and engage with local partners.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in Geography, Geospatial Sciences, Environmental Science, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in GIS and spatial analysis is required. Experience working with government agencies or international organizations in a similar capacity is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Somali is an advantage and would be beneficial for effective communication with local stakeholders.

This position is a volunteer role, and the duration of the contract is not specified. The role may require flexibility in working hours to accommodate collaboration with local teams. The position is based in Somalia, and candidates should be prepared for the living conditions in the region.
