Job Overview:
The position of Consultant / Survey Team Leader involves implementing AI-assisted photo-based quality and food loss assessments specifically targeting the tomato value chain in wholesale and retail markets in Nigeria. This role is crucial in addressing the significant food loss occurring in the region due to inadequate cold chain systems and postharvest handling. The consultant will be responsible for utilizing advanced technologies to measure food loss accurately and identify critical areas for intervention. The project aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of food systems in conflict-affected Northeast Nigeria, ultimately contributing to improved food availability and nutritional quality for consumers. The consultant will work closely with market unions and stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of the project, which is supported by the Japanese Government’s FY2025 Supplementary Budget.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Consultant / Survey Team Leader will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Sensitizing market unions to harmonize activities for the project, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and engaged.
  • Taking videos in the Farin Gada Vegetable Market in Jos, following specific instructions to ensure the quality of data for AI training.
  • Collecting necessary data during the preparation stage and throughout the research process to develop the 3D measurement program.
  • Implementing the AI-assisted photo-based quality assessment on tomatoes in various wholesale and retail markets.
  • Utilizing the 3D measurement program to estimate the volume of discarded tomatoes, providing critical insights into food loss.
  • Collaborating with local market associations to facilitate data collection and project implementation.
  • Reporting findings and providing recommendations based on the assessment results to improve postharvest practices.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position must possess the following qualifications:
  • Demonstrated outstanding experience in conducting field surveys specifically in Northeast Nigeria, showcasing familiarity with the local context and challenges.
  • Proven experience in agricultural economics, value chain analysis, and horticulture research within Nigeria, indicating a strong understanding of the agricultural landscape.
  • Expertise in advanced digital and IT technologies relevant to the project, ensuring the effective use of AI and data analysis tools.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with market unions and associations, facilitating the introduction of the intervention and data collection processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with stakeholders and ensure smooth project execution.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a relevant educational background in agricultural economics, horticulture, or a related field. A higher degree (Master's or PhD) is preferred, particularly for those with extensive research experience and a strong understanding of food systems and agricultural practices in Nigeria.

Experience:
The position requires significant experience in conducting field surveys and research in agricultural settings, particularly in Northeast Nigeria. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing interventions aimed at reducing postharvest food loss and should be knowledgeable about the challenges faced in the region's food supply chain.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication with stakeholders and reporting findings will be essential. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Nigeria would be advantageous but is not a strict requirement.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is anticipated to run from April 2026 to March 2027, with the possibility of an earlier start date. The consultant will be expected to work full-time on this project, and the role may involve collaboration with international partners.
