Job Posting Organization:
The position is located within the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Shop, part of the Mechanical Unit (MU) under the Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) of the Division of Administration (DOA) at the United Nations. The Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide operational advisory services across various entities of the UN Secretariat, including departments, field missions, and regional commissions. The FCAS is responsible for the effective management and operation of the UN Headquarters complex in New York, ensuring that all facilities and assets are maintained efficiently. The organization strives to support various services including property management, travel, transportation, and catering, among others, to facilitate the smooth functioning of the UN's operations.

Job Overview:
The HVAC Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems within the UN facilities. This position requires the technician to operate, test, and service HVAC equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety. The technician will work both independently and as part of a team to conduct preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and install HVAC/R systems. The role also involves utilizing a Building Management System (BMS) to monitor equipment operations and make necessary adjustments. The technician must be adept at reading blueprints and schematics to ensure the safe operation of critical equipment, especially during emergencies. Additionally, the technician will collaborate with security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security and safety staff to maintain compliance with safety standards and protocols, particularly concerning bio-terrorism threats. The position also includes supervising and training junior staff and overseeing the work of outside contractors, ensuring that all tasks are completed to the highest standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The HVAC Technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: operating, testing, and servicing HVAC systems; performing preventive maintenance and repairs; utilizing BMS for monitoring and control; reading and interpreting blueprints; applying knowledge of current standards for maintenance; collaborating with security staff; repairing and maintaining controls; recording work time and materials; supervising junior staff; inspecting work and preparing reports; and assuming lead responsibilities when necessary. The technician will also be expected to perform additional duties as assigned by the Foreperson of the HVAC Shop, ensuring that all work is conducted safely and efficiently.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid EPA Universal Refrigerant License and ideally a valid FDNY issued Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01), which must be obtained within one year of appointment if not already held. Certification in OSHA construction safety is desirable. Additionally, completion of an approved HVAC/R trade school or technical training program is required. Candidates should demonstrate professional competencies in HVAC systems, familiarity with relevant tools, and knowledge of safety procedures.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required for this position. Candidates must have completed an approved HVAC/R trade school or technical training program to qualify for the role.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressive work experience in the HVAC trade is required. This experience should include independent troubleshooting and installations of HVAC/R systems. Familiarity with operating a Building Management System (BMS) or equivalent is desirable, as is experience in installing and troubleshooting HVAC control wiring. Experience in leading or training junior technicians is also preferred.

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered an asset but not mandatory for this role.

Additional Notes:
This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. The appointment is for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs. The selected candidate may be required to work evenings or Saturdays as part of their shift schedule or for emergency maintenance. The role involves physical demands, including the ability to lift up to 60 lbs and work in various positions, including standing, stooping, and climbing.
