Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) in Sri Lanka, particularly in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. This position involves managing emergency relief and response data at both national and district levels across 25 districts. The volunteer will ensure efficient information flow between field teams, headquarters, and external stakeholders, including government ministries, NGOs, and UN agencies. The role is vital for informed decision-making and improved coordination during the disaster response phase, emphasizing the importance of accurate data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will report directly to the Programme Officer (DRR & Climate Change) and the Relief Officer at the District Secretariat. Key responsibilities include:
Data Collection & Management: Gather data from various sources, including hotlines and field teams, regarding relief activities and needs assessments. Ensure data accuracy and timely entry into relevant systems.
Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyze collected data to identify trends and priority needs, preparing summary reports for stakeholders.
Information Dissemination: Distribute verified data and reports to relevant stakeholders, maintaining updated situation reports.
Stakeholder Coordination: Liaise with government, humanitarian partners, and local authorities to harmonize data collection standards and participate in coordination meetings.
Compliance & Confidentiality: Adhere to data protection guidelines and ensure compliance with agency policies.
Support monitoring of response implementation.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Proficiency in data management software and reporting tools is essential. The volunteer should possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment. A commitment to the principles of humanitarian action and a strong understanding of the context in which UNICEF operates are also required.
Educational Background: A degree in social sciences, data management, statistics, or a related field is required. Additional training or certifications in data analysis or humanitarian response would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have prior experience in data collection, management, or analysis, preferably in a humanitarian or development context. Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, or UN organizations is highly desirable. Familiarity with emergency response mechanisms and disaster management processes will be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Sinhala or Tamil is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance data collection efforts.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position is full-time and requires a commitment to the principles of humanitarian action. The volunteer will receive entitlements as per the UN Volunteer Conditions of Service.
