Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed for motivated individuals who are eager to support the Journal Unit of the Central Planning and Coordination Division within the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The Journal Unit plays a crucial role in documenting the daily activities and meetings at the United Nations Headquarters, providing a comprehensive record of discussions and decisions made. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that contribute to the publication of the Journal of the United Nations, gaining valuable experience in a dynamic international environment. This internship is a full-time commitment, requiring interns to work 40 hours per week for a duration of six months. Interns will collaborate closely with members of the Unit, allowing them to gain insights into the inner workings of the UN and the importance of effective communication and documentation in international diplomacy.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will have a diverse set of responsibilities that may include: assisting in the publication process of the Journal of the United Nations; maintaining and updating databases and planning dashboards relevant to the Journal Unit; compiling, reviewing, and analyzing data necessary for the publication of meetings and events; providing technical assistance with the Journal Content Management System (JCMS); addressing queries from submitters and secretariats regarding the Journal's programs or summaries; offering administrative support to the Unit; and performing any other related duties as assigned. The specific tasks assigned to each intern will depend on their background, the projects undertaken, and the duration of their internship, allowing for a tailored experience that aligns with their skills and interests.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: they should be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or they should be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not a requirement for the UN Internship Programme, applicants must have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Additionally, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Teams, which are essential for performing the tasks associated with this internship.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in or having completed a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. This ensures that interns have a solid academic foundation and are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to the work of the Journal Unit. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant academic program will need to be provided during the application process.

Experience:
This internship does not require prior professional work experience, making it an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in an international organization. However, applicants should have a strong academic background in a field relevant to the internship, which will help them understand the context and responsibilities of the position. The internship is particularly suited for individuals looking to enhance their skills and knowledge in international relations, communications, or related fields.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English and French is required for this internship, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance an applicant's candidacy. Proficiency in multiple languages is beneficial in the multicultural environment of the UN, where effective communication is key to collaboration and understanding.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements with the UN prior to accepting the internship offer. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring that the application process is accessible and equitable for all candidates.
