Job Overview:
The WASH Project Assistant will play a crucial role in the implementation of WASH projects according to the agreed response strategy and plan. This position requires close collaboration with the National Project Officer (WASH) and other project assistants throughout the various stages of project planning, implementation, and monitoring. The assistant will participate in assessments to define technical documents and contracts for the construction, rehabilitation, and upgrading of WASH facilities. Additionally, the role involves continuous monitoring of WASH activities using both quantitative and qualitative data to ensure compliance with IOM, donor, and international standards. The assistant will also provide technical inputs for logistics and procurement processes, assist in preparing contractual agreements, and support site planning for new developments and extensions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the WASH Project Assistant include: assisting in the implementation of WASH projects according to the response strategy; liaising with the National Project Officer and other project assistants; participating in assessments of water and sanitation needs; monitoring and verifying that WASH projects are implemented in accordance with established standards; preparing technical site layouts and bills of quantities; providing technical inputs to logistics and procurement; supporting the preparation of material requests and verifying specifications; assisting in site planning and topographical surveys; assessing emergency needs; submitting timely reports; collaborating with WASH Cluster partners; maintaining effective communication with local government and stakeholders; suggesting areas for improvement; and performing other assigned duties.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the WASH Project Assistant position include a high school degree or equivalent with at least five years of relevant working experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Public Health, or a related field from an accredited institution with at least three years of relevant work experience. Experience in the humanitarian field is mandatory, and experience in WASH in emergencies is considered an asset. Familiarity with design-related software such as AutoCAD and the ability to prepare schedules, bills of quantities, and cost estimates are also advantageous.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess either a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification with significant relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, or Public Health. The educational background should be from an accredited academic institution, ensuring that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in the role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience if they hold a Bachelor’s Degree, or five years if they have a high school diploma. Experience in the humanitarian sector is essential, particularly in WASH-related projects. Familiarity with emergency response and the ability to work under pressure in challenging environments are critical. Experience with design software and project management tools will be beneficial for candidates.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization and for reporting purposes. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with local stakeholders and communities.

This position may involve working in a full-time capacity, and the contract duration will be specified upon hiring.
