Job Overview: The NDC Tracking Expert will play a crucial role in supporting the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) project in Zambia. This position involves close collaboration with the National ICAT team leader and other team members to ensure the successful completion of project activities related to tracking Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The expert will provide technical input and support the elaboration and submission of deliverables and reports. The role requires a strong understanding of climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as experience in developing and implementing transparency frameworks for climate action. The expert will also engage with national authorities and stakeholders to ensure the technical quality and timely submission of all deliverables, contributing to the overall objectives of the ICAT project.
Duties and Responsibilities: The NDC Tracking Expert will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Collaborating with the ICAT local team lead and GHG Inventory Coordinating Agency to ensure effective execution of project activities.
Engaging with national authorities and stakeholders to support the technical quality of deliverables.
Providing technical input for GHG emissions projections and mitigation scenario development.
Assisting in the identification and analysis of policies and measures under key NDC sectors.
Developing frameworks for tracking NDC implementation progress, including identifying indicators and procedures for data collection.
Conducting stakeholder consultations and validation workshops to gather feedback on project outputs.
Preparing reports and documentation related to project deliverables, including inception reports, stocktaking reports, and validation workshop reports.
Supporting capacity building efforts for national stakeholders on GHG emissions projections and NDC tracking methodologies.
Ensuring compliance with the project workplan and timelines, with deliverables reviewed and approved by the Project Coordinator of UNEP-CCC.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in natural or social sciences, or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant combination of four years of additional experience. A minimum of five years of proven working experience in climate/environment protection is required, along with experience in diverse methodologies and tools for NDC tracking and climate indicators. Candidates should have a strong understanding of climate change issues, mitigation policies, and sustainable development, as well as demonstrated experience in NDC stocktaking and engagement with international development projects.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in natural or social sciences is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Candidates should have a strong academic background in climate change, environmental science, or related fields.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in climate/environment protection, with a focus on NDC tracking and climate indicators. Candidates should have experience working with international development projects and engaging with national and local stakeholders related to climate mitigation efforts.
Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not specified as requirements.
