Job Overview:
The Resident Coordinator (RC) serves as the highest-ranking representative of the UN development system in the country, responsible for leading the UN country team and ensuring accountability for the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The RC's role is pivotal in fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, including government entities, civil society, and the private sector, to address national priorities and challenges related to sustainable development. The RC is tasked with advocating for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring that the UN's efforts are aligned with the 2030 Agenda, promoting an inclusive approach that leaves no one behind. The position requires a deep understanding of the UN's operational frameworks and the ability to navigate complex political environments to facilitate effective partnerships and resource mobilization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Resident Coordinator is responsible for a wide range of duties, including representing the UN at high-level state functions, leading the UN country team in developing and monitoring the UN Cooperation Framework, and coordinating system-wide support to the government. The RC must engage with diverse partners to identify and mitigate risks to achieving the SDGs, promote human rights and gender equality, and foster strategic partnerships at national and sub-national levels. Additionally, the RC is responsible for overseeing country financing instruments, ensuring effective communication of UN efforts, and managing security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security coordination for UN personnel. The role also involves facilitating collaboration among UN entities and promoting common business operations to enhance efficiency and coherence in development efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or an equivalent postgraduate qualification in fields such as development studies, international relations, political science, or social sciences. A first-level university degree combined with relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. The position requires a minimum of 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level, including at least five years in development, human rights, or humanitarian work at the country level. Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator or in a senior security role is desirable, along with strong political acumen and diplomatic skills.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or equivalent in relevant fields is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree and significant relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should align with the responsibilities of the position, emphasizing the importance of understanding international relations, development frameworks, and human rights.

Experience:
The position demands a minimum of 15 years of experience in leadership roles at the international level, with a focus on development, human rights, and humanitarian work. Candidates should have a proven track record of engaging with senior government officials and managing complex programs. Experience in peacebuilding contexts and working with diverse stakeholders is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the UN's operational frameworks and security protocols.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Portuguese is considered a desirable language, also requiring a minimum proficiency of UN Level III. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication and collaboration within the UN system and with external partners.

Additional Notes:
The start date for this position is set for December 2026, with a potential assignment duration of four years, subject to the hardship classification of the duty station. Candidates must be members of the Resident Coordinator Pool and can apply if they have one year or less of service remaining in their current duty station.
