Job Overview: The Lead Analyst position involves significant responsibilities in the preparation of thematic reports for the National Statistical Office (NSO) in Nepal, under the guidance of the Associate Coordination Officer and the WASHTeam Lead in Nairobi. The consultant will be tasked with developing and submitting an inception report, which will outline the thematic report's structure and content, including tables, graphs, and maps. The role requires participation in workshops, collaboration with analysts and experts, and the ability to review literature related to the thematic report topic. The Lead Analyst will also be responsible for drafting the thematic report, incorporating feedback from reviewers, and ensuring that the final report meets the prescribed formats and guidelines. This position is critical in ensuring that the NSO receives comprehensive and well-analyzed reports that contribute to the understanding of population and demographic issues in Nepal.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Lead Analyst will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including:
Participating in orientation workshops organized by the NSO and relevant agencies.
Developing and submitting an inception report to NSO/UN-Habitat by the first week of February 2026, which includes an outline of the thematic report, dummy tables for census data, and a summary of other relevant data.
Conducting a review of literature related to the thematic report topic.
Collaborating with analysts and experts for the thematic report preparation, consulting with the Ministry of Water Supply as necessary.
Participating in writing workshops and presenting progress updates.
Preparing and submitting the first draft of the thematic report by the third week of April 202
Incorporating feedback from reviewers and preparing a note explaining how comments have been addressed.
Submitting the final thematic report to NSO/UN-Habitat by the end of May 2026, including all necessary annexes and Excel files.
Preparing a PowerPoint presentation of key findings for dissemination events. 1
Ensuring that all outputs are submitted in compliance with NSO guidelines and that the final product remains confidential until approved for dissemination.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in Applied Statistics or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. A minimum of two years of experience in data analysis, research, and writing on population and demographic issues is required. Additionally, experience in an executive position at government, semi-government, or relevant agencies is necessary. Candidates should have a strong understanding of national and international data sources, methodologies, and geo-spatial/statistical techniques. Proven ability to process and analyze microdata from various data sources is desirable, as is experience in analyzing themes such as gender equality and poverty using national data.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in Applied Statistics or a related field. Candidates with a first-level university degree may be considered if they have two additional years of relevant experience. This educational foundation is essential for understanding complex data analysis and research methodologies necessary for the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in data analysis, research, and writing, specifically focusing on population and demographic issues. Candidates should have experience working in executive roles within government or semi-government agencies, or other organizations relevant to statistics and research. Familiarity with national and international data sources, as well as experience in analyzing demographic themes, is highly desirable.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of the Nepali language is considered desirable, as it may facilitate communication and understanding of local contexts and data sources.
Additional Notes: The assignment is expected to last for a duration of five months, with outputs being paid in three installments based on the acceptable submission of deliverables. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, including application, interview, or training.
