Job Overview: The Communications Officer plays a pivotal role in enhancing Save the Children’s visibility and voice in Vanuatu. This position requires close collaboration with various teams, including programme, advocacy, and partnerships, to effectively capture and amplify the voices of children. The officer is responsible for producing high-quality communications materials and supporting media and digital engagement efforts. By employing ethical storytelling techniques and adhering to strong brand compliance, the Communications Officer ensures that the organization’s work and its impact are communicated clearly to the public, partners, and donors. Duties and Responsibilities: The Communications Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to: amplifying children’s voices through ethical storytelling that reflects their perspectives; delivering compelling communications content such as stories, photos, videos, and publications that showcase the impact of Save the Children’s programs; supporting advocacy and public engagement efforts by creating timely and accurate communications products aligned with policy and campaign priorities; ensuring strong visibility and brand compliance across all communications materials; collaborating with programme teams and partners to capture field-based content and translate complex program work into accessible messages; promoting safe and meaningful child participation in communications, ensuring ethical involvement of children; following safety guidelines and reporting risks or incidents; and upholding safeguarding policies to maintain a child-safe environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Communications Officer position must possess proven experience in communications, media, or public engagement within government, civil society, or international development contexts. Strong skills in developing diverse communications content, including stories, photos, social media posts, publications, or multimedia materials, are essential. The ability to work collaboratively with programme teams and external partners to translate program information into clear and engaging messages is crucial. Experience in supporting media engagement and managing digital platforms, including social media content planning, is also required. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and follow approval processes are necessary. A commitment to Save the Children’s values, including children's rights, ethical storytelling, localization, and child safeguarding principles, is expected.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a relevant degree in communications, media studies, public relations, or a related field. Additional certifications or training in child rights, ethical storytelling, or safeguarding practices would be advantageous and demonstrate a commitment to the values upheld by Save the Children.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience in communications or a related field, with a proven track record of producing high-quality content and engaging with diverse audiences. Experience in the non-profit sector, particularly in child-focused organizations, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the local context in Vanuatu and understanding of the challenges faced by children in the region will be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English and Bislama is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess strong cultural awareness and sensitivity when working across Vanuatu’s diverse communities. Knowledge of additional local languages would be considered an asset and enhance communication efforts within various communities.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Port Vila, Shéfa, Vanuatu, and is a full-time role. The organization offers an attractive salary package along with medical reimbursement benefits. Employees are entitled to generous leave provisions, including 21 days of annual leave, 20 days of sick leave, 14 weeks of maternity leave, 10 days of paternity leave, 7 days of compassionate leave, 10 days of domestic violence leave, and 6 days of study leave. Home leave allowance is provided during Christmas.
