Job Overview:
The position of Copy Editor for the Annual Report at UN Women involves providing essential editorial services to enhance the clarity and accessibility of the Annual Report for external audiences. The role is crucial in ensuring that the report effectively communicates the impact and results of UN Women’s initiatives. The editor will be tasked with making the report concise and digestible, thereby maximizing its impact. This includes editing, proofreading, and rewriting content as necessary, ensuring adherence to the UN editorial style manual, and collaborating with project teams to identify gaps in information and improve the overall presentation of the report. The editor will also focus on content reduction and prioritization, ensuring that key messages are highlighted while eliminating unnecessary details.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Copy Editor will be responsible for a comprehensive set of tasks, including:
  • Editing and proofreading the Annual Report and UN Cooperation Framework Annual Reports to ensure clarity and professionalism.
  • Making necessary revisions in accordance with the UN editorial style manual.
  • Copyediting and proofreading to identify gaps in information and restructure content as needed in collaboration with project teams.
  • Correcting spelling mistakes, typos, and ensuring proper grammar and syntax throughout the document.
  • Reducing content and prioritizing key impacts and results to enhance readability.
  • Improving the logical flow and clarity of sections within the report.
  • Ensuring coherence and consistency in writing, including the application of consistent headings, numbering, and styles.
  • Formatting the report to ensure appropriate positioning and number of boxes, figures, and tables.
  • Ensuring the language and tone are concise, professional, and action-oriented while removing jargon to make the report accessible to a broad audience.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong editing and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail and a solid understanding of the UN editorial style manual. Experience in copyediting reports, particularly in the context of gender equality and women's empowerment, is highly desirable. The ability to work collaboratively with project teams and communicate effectively is essential. Familiarity with the subject matter related to UN Women’s initiatives will be an advantage.

Educational Background:
A background in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have formal training or significant experience in editing and proofreading, particularly in a professional or academic setting.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in copyediting or proofreading, ideally within the context of international organizations or non-profits. Experience working with reports or publications related to gender equality, development, or human rights will be beneficial. The role may require familiarity with the UN system and its operations, as well as an understanding of the challenges faced by women and girls globally.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the reports will be edited in English. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the regions where UN Women operates, would be considered an asset but is not required.
