The United Nations Development System was reformed on January 1, 2019, to enhance its effectiveness in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) play a crucial role in this reform, led by an empowered UN Resident Coordinator who represents the UN Secretary-General at the country level. The UN RCO supports countries in achieving their development priorities and the SDGs, operating in various countries worldwide with a focus on collaboration and partnership.

Job Overview:
The Development Coordination Officer/Economist position is integral to the UN Resident Coordination Office in Lima, Peru. This role involves planning, facilitating, and consolidating evidence-based analyses of the status of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The officer will provide substantive advice to the Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) on SDG acceleration, economic transformation, and SDG financing. The position requires a strong focus on creating partnerships within the UN System and with national counterparts, including International Financial Institutions (IFIs), to support the reframing of economic policies for sustainable development. The officer will coordinate the development of an integrated SDG programming cycle, ensuring that the UNCT's efforts are aligned with the economic transformation agenda and SDG financing strategies. Additionally, the role involves knowledge generation and management to foster a shared understanding of sustainable development trends and challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans, facilitates, and consolidates evidence-based analysis of the SDGs, providing advice on SDG acceleration and economic transformation.
  • Advocates for strong partnerships within the UN System and with national counterparts to support economic policy reframing.
  • Coordinates the development of an integrated SDG programming cycle, including roadmaps and annual reports.
  • Plans and directs knowledge management around SDG acceleration and financing, promoting collaboration and innovation.
  • Conducts research and analysis on best practices in SDG acceleration and economic transformation.
  • Supports the UNCT in preparing reports on SDG acceleration and financing.
  • Engages with the private sector to identify SDG financing opportunities.
  • Monitors regional and global economic trends and their implications for SDG acceleration.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic research, and analysis. Knowledge of economics is essential, with familiarity in development economics and relevant experience at the national or international level being desirable. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of SDG financing and the UN Normative agenda, along with proven experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder processes and participatory assessments. Outstanding analytical and writing skills are crucial, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and engagingly.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic research, and analysis is required. Candidates should have a strong understanding of development economics and the ability to apply economic theories to specific country contexts. Experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder processes and participatory assessments is also essential.

Languages:
English and Spanish are required for this position, with proficiency in both languages necessary for effective communication within the UN system. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Additional Notes:
The position is full-time and based in Lima, Peru. The contract duration is for six months, and the role may involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including government entities and international organizations. Compensation and benefits will be aligned with UN standards.
