Job Overview: The Senior External Relations Assistant plays a crucial role within the External Relations Unit of UNHCR, which includes teams focused on External Relations, Reporting, and Public Information/Communications. This position is designed for an individual who will support the External Relations Officer and contribute to the overall mission of the unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include drafting reports, preparing project proposals, and organizing visits for foreign delegations and donors. The role requires a strong command of both English and Spanish, as effective communication is essential for liaising with various stakeholders. The candidate will also be expected to monitor and ensure visibility for institutional donors, plan events, and maintain excellent reporting standards. This position is integral to enhancing UNHCR's external relations and ensuring that the organization's activities are well-communicated to partners and the public.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senior External Relations Assistant include but are not limited to: drafting briefing notes, press releases, bulletins, reports, and newsletters; facilitating visits of foreign delegations, partner NGOs, donors, and media to refugee camps; translating routine correspondence and texts; assisting in the development and implementation of UNHCR's social media strategy; ensuring the availability of public information materials; organizing visibility events such as World Refugee Day; compiling thematic reports and situation reports; reviewing media daily to keep the office informed of local developments; providing information on UNHCR's activities to external partners; responding to media queries; identifying and managing risks; and performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong writing and speaking skills in both English and Spanish, with a minimum of B2 proficiency in English and native proficiency in Spanish. They should have at least two years of relevant experience in External Relations, preferably within an international organization. Experience in drafting internal and external documents, organizing field visits, and ensuring visibility for large institutional donors is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, coordination, organization, and communication abilities, with the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively in teams.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a High School Diploma with two years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with one year of relevant work experience. Fields of education that are relevant include International Relations, Journalism, Political Science, Communication, and Media. Certifications in these areas are considered essential for the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in External Relations or related fields. Candidates with previous experience in UN or UNHCR settings, as well as those who have completed UNHCR learning programs or specific training relevant to the functions of the position, will be given preference. Experience in humanitarian organizations and knowledge of another relevant UN language are also desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English and Spanish is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional UN languages is considered an asset, particularly for candidates applying for international professional roles. For national professional jobs, knowledge of the local language is also required.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA) and is expected to be based in Lima, Peru. The contract duration is until mid-year, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs, budget, and performance. Candidates must be legally present in Peru at the time of application, recruitment, and appointment. The position is not remote and requires in-person attendance.
