Job Overview: The Head of Science Gateway will play a pivotal role in shaping the future vision and development of the Science Gateway, a unique venue that has already welcomed over 750,000 visitors from 179 countries in its first two years. This position requires strategic direction and operational leadership to ensure that the facilities, activities, and visitor experiences align with CERN's mission of sharing knowledge and inspiring curiosity about science and innovation. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality exhibitions, educational programs, and events, while also driving the long-term evolution of the campus as a landmark destination for science engagement. The role involves close collaboration with internal stakeholders and partners to develop a multi-year strategic plan, manage budgets, and oversee the implementation of exhibitions and educational programs.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Head of Science Gateway include developing a long-term vision for the Science Gateway and associated campus, coordinating the implementation of exhibitions and educational programs, overseeing day-to-day campus operations, leading and developing the campus operations team, managing procurement and service contracts, building partnerships with universities and cultural institutions, contributing to fundraising efforts, and ensuring the visibility and reputation of the Science Gateway Campus. The role also involves maintaining high standards of visitor services, safety, and facility maintenance, as well as representing the Campus to external stakeholders and acting as its main point of contact.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in fields such as Management, Science Communication, Cultural Management, Museum Studies, Education, Public Administration, or Business Management. Additional training or certification in leadership, project management, cultural or museum operations, public engagement, or facility management is considered an asset. Extensive experience in leading complex visitor-facing, cultural, scientific, or public engagement facilities is required, along with proven experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and developing strategies in partnership with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: A Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field is required for this position. Candidates should have a strong educational background that supports their ability to manage and lead in a complex environment, particularly in areas related to science communication, cultural management, or public engagement.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in leading visitor-facing facilities, managing teams, and developing partnerships with educational and cultural institutions. Proven experience in budget management, contract management, and overseeing operations is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate a track record of delivering strategies in collaboration with various stakeholders and managing complex projects effectively.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with diverse audiences.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract. The role requires full-time onsite work, with a 40-hour work week. Candidates should be prepared for participation in regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays. A valid driving license is also required. The job grade is 8, and the reference for this position is SCE-2025-266-LD.
