Job Overview:
The Statistics Intern position within the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in gaining practical experience in the field of statistics and data analysis. Interns will work closely with experienced statisticians and contribute to various projects that support the division's mission of enhancing statistical capacity and promoting the use of data for sustainable development. The internship is designed to be full-time and in-person, although flexible work arrangements may be available based on the needs of the successful candidate. Interns will engage in a range of activities, including data collection, validation, analysis, and visualization, while also supporting the development of statistical databases and software. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates who are passionate about statistics and eager to contribute to meaningful projects that have a global impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall work of the UNSD. These tasks include: - Creating research and written contributions for drafting reports and other documents. - Supporting data collection, manipulation, validation, analysis, dissemination, and visualization. - Developing software prototypes using programming languages such as Python. - Producing inputs for outreach efforts, including social media content. - Maintaining and updating databases and dashboards. - Assisting with the organization of meetings and other ad hoc tasks as assigned. - Designing, organizing, planning, and managing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation, and dissemination of statistical data. - Developing, implementing, and managing statistical databases. - Providing training and technical support on data collection programs and country practices. - Conducting methodological research as inputs for technical documentation. - Preparing draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental, and expert group meetings. - Assisting in the organization of seminars, working groups, and expert meetings. - Supporting communication, data storytelling, and data visualization efforts. - Performing other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R is desirable. While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have a field of study that closely relates to the internship they are applying for. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. The ability to draft news articles and social media posts is also desirable, as is the capability to design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master's or Ph.D. program. A strong academic background in statistics, data science, economics, social sciences, or a related field is preferred, as this will provide the necessary foundation for the tasks and responsibilities associated with the internship.

Experience:
While no prior professional work experience is required, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. This could include projects, research, or coursework in statistics, data analysis, or related fields. The internship is particularly suited for individuals who are eager to learn and apply their knowledge in a practical setting, contributing to the work of the United Nations.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to cover their own costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. The internship is designed to last between two to six months, with the possibility of extension based on departmental needs. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and the organization does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
