Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established in 195
It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to explore the fundamental structure of the universe. CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and diversity. The organization operates in multiple countries and is committed to advancing scientific knowledge and technology through international cooperation.
Job Overview: As a Mechanical Technician at CERN, you will be an integral part of the ATLAS Detector Operation Group, responsible for maintaining and operating the ATLAS detector, as well as supporting its upgrade. This role requires hands-on experience and a strong team spirit, as you will be involved in significant installations of detector systems in the challenging environment of the experimental cavern. Your versatility will be crucial in overcoming the exciting challenges presented by the upgrade, and you will be expected to work collaboratively with other team members to ensure the successful implementation of new technologies and methodologies.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary duties will include the installation of new sub-detectors using specialized mechanical tooling and precise positioning techniques. You will also be responsible for setting up access platforms and standard scaffolding towers in various configurations. Participation in sub-detector movements will require accurate positioning and the operation of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical equipment. Additionally, you will define manufacturing methods, manufacture parts and tooling using both conventional and CNC machines, and assemble different components according to detailed instructions, making adjustments as necessary to ensure optimal functionality. You will apply mechanical measurement techniques and conventional dimensional metrology to ensure the highest standards of quality and precision in your work.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics or a related discipline. You should have demonstrated experience in the on-site installation of mechanical devices or structures, as well as strong machining experience using both conventional and CNC machines. A good understanding of mechanical design drawings and tolerance specifications is essential, and experience in scaffolding or personnel-platform installation would be considered an asset. Initial experience in operating hydraulic, pneumatic, or electromechanical equipment is also advantageous.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a technical certificate or general secondary education in Mechanics or a related field. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding mechanical systems and their applications in a research environment.
Experience: The position requires demonstrated experience in the installation of mechanical devices or structures, with a strong emphasis on hands-on work in a technical environment. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with both conventional and CNC machining processes, as well as familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Experience in scaffolding or personnel-platform installation is a plus, as is any background in operating electromechanical equipment.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement ensures effective communication within the diverse international team at CERN.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The job requires a commitment to working 40 hours per week, fully onsite, and may involve work in radiation areas, underground installations, and during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Candidates must also possess a valid driving license and will be exposed to certain occupational health risks, necessitating medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
