Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. With a mission to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering international collaboration in the field of particle physics and engineering. CERN is known for its cutting-edge research and development in high-energy physics, utilizing the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), among other advanced scientific instruments.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Engineer position at CERN is pivotal in the design, prototyping, and industrialization of ultra-high-vacuum components for accelerator upgrades and new projects. The role involves owning structural analyses, developing test and acceptance plans, managing supplier interfaces, and ensuring the delivery of installation-ready hardware. The successful candidate will work within the Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings (VSC) Group, which emphasizes clear engineering standards, rigorous safety and quality protocols, and close collaboration with operations, test facilities, and industry partners. The engineer will be responsible for evaluating the structural performance of high-vacuum equipment using finite element modelling (FEM) codes, selecting appropriate materials and fabrication techniques, and documenting results in reports and scientific publications. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying collaboration opportunities with external institutes and industry partners.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer include:
Designing and evaluating the structural performance of high-vacuum equipment using finite element modelling (FEM) codes, focusing on buckling and vibrational behavior.
Selecting the most appropriate and cost-effective materials and fabrication techniques for accelerator vacuum components.
Leading the transition of designed equipment from prototyping to industrial production.
Writing comprehensive technical specifications for projects.
Searching for, selecting, and collaborating with industrial suppliers and service contract providers.
Following up on the technical aspects of industrial contracts, including the preparation and implementation of quality assurance (QA) and control (QC) programs.
Identifying new collaboration opportunities and in-kind contributions with external institutes and industry partners for accelerator vacuum components.
Documenting results in detailed reports, scientific publications, and presentations to share findings with the scientific community.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with a PhD in Structural Mechanics being an asset. Proven experience in the design and simulation of complex mechanical systems is essential, along with experience in preparing and implementing QA/QC protocols. Candidates should demonstrate experience in preparing technical specifications and monitoring technical contracts with industrial suppliers. Additionally, experience in scientific writing and presenting technical results at management and scientific forums is required. Knowledge of standard high and ultra-high-vacuum components and piping, as well as ultra-high-vacuum sealing techniques, is advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. A PhD in Structural Mechanics or a similar discipline would be particularly beneficial, as it indicates a higher level of expertise and understanding of the complexities involved in the design and analysis of mechanical systems.
Experience: Candidates should have proven experience in the design and simulation of complex mechanical systems, particularly in the context of high-vacuum equipment. Experience in preparing and implementing QA/QC protocols is crucial, as is the ability to prepare technical specifications and monitor technical contracts with industrial suppliers. The ideal candidate will also have experience in scientific writing and presenting technical results at various forums, showcasing their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the primary working language at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and requires a valid driving license. Shift work, stand-by duty, and work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays may be required based on the needs of the organization. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is TE-VSC-DLM-2025-263-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free and increases with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
