Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to push the frontiers of science and technology, CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among physicists, engineers, and administrative professionals. Diversity is a core value at CERN, and it remains central to its mission and continued success, ensuring that every contribution is valued and that the organization thrives on the diverse perspectives within its teams.
Job Overview: The position involves joining a team focused on the design and implementation of oil-filled and cast-resin transformers for power converter applications. The role is critical as many oil-filled transformers are being replaced with cast-resin transformers for environmental reasons. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing studies related to power transformers and power converter systems, drafting technical specifications, managing the tendering process, overseeing industrial production, conducting factory testing, and ensuring quality management. Additionally, the role includes activities related to the installation and commissioning of power transformers. The candidate will also develop simulation models for power converter systems to ensure proper dimensioning of transformers used in particle accelerator operations. This position offers the opportunity to take on increasing responsibilities, particularly in maintenance activities for both oil-filled and cast-resin transformers, while supervising and coordinating contractors at CERN. The role is part of a skilled team dedicated to the operation, maintenance, and development of high-power converter systems ranging from 1 to 150 MW.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities for this position include conducting electrical design studies and simulations for cast-resin transformers and their associated power converters. The candidate will perform 3D mechanical design studies to integrate transformers into their designated pits. They will draft technical specifications for cast-resin transformers and actively participate in the procurement process. The role also involves managing contracts and supervising contractors' personnel, collaborating with manufacturers during the detailed design process of transformers, and following up on the factory consolidation of large oil-filled transformers. The candidate will validate, conduct type and routine testing in the factory, and participate in the installation and commissioning of transformers. Additionally, they will supervise the consolidation of transformer pits and engage in the operation and maintenance of the systems.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field. The highest educational qualification should be either a Bachelor's or Master's degree. It is essential that applicants have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Those without a university degree or with a PhD are not eligible for this position. The role requires experience in power transformers, power electronics, and high-power systems, including engineering, design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, operation, and/or maintenance. Familiarity with design and modeling of high-power converter systems using tools like MATLAB SIMULINK or PSIM is also necessary.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a closely related field. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of power transformers and power converter systems, as well as for engaging in the design and modeling tasks that the role entails.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should be relevant to the fields of electrical engineering or power electronics, particularly in areas related to power transformers and high-power systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in engineering, design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of such systems.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly desirable. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN, where collaboration among international teams is a daily occurrence.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The job is fully onsite, and the target start date is set for March 1, 202
The position involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license. The job reference for this position is SY-EPC-HPC-2025-291-GRAE. Compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, the role offers opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
