Interns will work full-time, dedicating 40 hours per week under the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. The role is unpaid, and interns are expected to support various projects and initiatives related to disaster risk reduction, particularly those that focus on locally-led initiatives and urban resilience. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in literature reviews, data development, report drafting, and the creation of communication products, all while contributing to the overarching mission of the United Nations in reducing disaster risks.
Duties and Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Disaster Risk Knowledge Intern will vary based on the individual's background and the specific period of the internship. Indicative responsibilities include:
Supporting the implementation of interventions related to locally-led disaster risk reduction initiatives, including the Making Cities Resilient 2030 project and other related efforts.
Conducting literature reviews for project proposals, ensuring that considerations for gender and disability inclusion are integrated into urban resilience strategies.
Assisting in the development of data and tools to track the progress of the locally-led disaster risk reduction portfolio at the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP).
Aiding in the drafting of reports, concept notes, policy briefs, and success stories related to the locally-led disaster risk reduction portfolio.
Contributing to the development of communication products, which may include print publications, web stories, e-newsletters, press kits, social media posts, infographics, and multimedia products.
Performing additional duties as required by the supervisor or the organization.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Candidates should be pursuing or have pursued a degree in fields such as Social Science, Statistics, Disaster Risk Management, Communication, or a related area. Additionally, candidates should possess strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. A strong interest in the mission of the United Nations and a commitment to its values are essential, along with the ability to work effectively with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: Candidates applying for the internship must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), or they must have completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. program.
