Job Posting Organization:
The ICT and Development Section (IDS) operates under the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The mission of ESCAP is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region. Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at the ICT and Development Section is designed to provide practical experience in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) and its application to sustainable development. Interns will work closely with experienced professionals and contribute to various projects and research initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide in the Asia-Pacific region. The internship is expected to last between two to six months, during which interns will be required to work full-time, five days a week, totaling 35 hours. This role is particularly suited for individuals who are passionate about ICT and its potential to drive development and improve lives in the region. Interns will gain exposure to analytical research, project implementation, and the organization of intergovernmental meetings, providing a comprehensive understanding of the UN's work in this critical area.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks that support the objectives of the ICT and Development Section. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting officers in conducting analytical research on ICT and digital agendas for sustainable development, including contributing to reports such as the Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report.
  • Compiling, processing, and analyzing data related to ICT for development, particularly focusing on countries with special situations such as least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS).
  • Supporting the implementation of programs and projects related to ICT and digital data for member states in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Assisting in the management and updating of the Section's website, ensuring that information is current and accessible.
  • Helping organize intergovernmental meetings and regional workshops, which may involve drafting concept notes, contacting participants, and developing program agendas.
  • Carrying out other substantive and administrative tasks as assigned by the Chief of the Section and the Division, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Additionally, applicants should possess ICT literacy in standard software applications and have skills in using statistical software such as Stata. A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Furthermore, candidates should exhibit the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. This may encompass areas such as economics, information technology, international relations, or other related disciplines. The emphasis is on candidates who are currently enrolled in academic programs or have recently completed their studies, ensuring that they are equipped with the theoretical knowledge necessary to contribute effectively to the Section's work.

Experience:
While significant work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in ICT and development issues. Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for the internship. As English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, proficiency in French is also advantageous. Knowledge of additional UN official languages, such as Chinese or Russian, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.
