Job Overview: The Writer/Editor III position is a crucial role within the G-REM Content & Editorial Studio team at CRS. This role focuses on producing high-quality, compelling content that effectively communicates the mission and work of CRS to diverse priority donors across the United States. The Writer/Editor is responsible for writing, editing, and producing a variety of materials, including private donor proposals, reports, online campaign materials, web pages, scripts, and presentations. The emphasis is on capturing the human impact of CRS's work globally. The position also involves substantive editing, proofreading, fact-checking, and organizing content produced by colleagues in other departments, ensuring timely dissemination of print and electronic communications. The Writer/Editor must ensure that all content is accurate, compelling, and adheres to the CRS editorial calendar and guidelines, maintaining a consistent voice and style throughout all communications.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Writer/Editor III will act as a gatekeeper for the editorial review processes of various publications and media for the G-REM divisions. This includes collaborating with staff writers, fellow editors, internal clients, and overseas program staff. The role involves editing several hundred projects annually, which may include donor magazines, annual reports, newsletters, brochures, and special publications, as well as multimedia materials and web pages. The Writer/Editor will research, write, proofread, and revise materials for donor communications from the CRS President & CEO’s office and other divisions. They will develop concepts and provide written content for online and direct mail solicitations to engage donors. The position requires updating online editorial calendars and assisting with editorial resources on the SharePoint site. Additionally, the Writer/Editor will collect, edit, and maintain human interest stories in online databases for agency-wide use, maintain web-based internal communications for information sharing, and collaborate with professionals across various disciplines, including funding, global programs, storytelling production, digital design, and analytics. The Writer/Editor will also represent the team in meetings and work collaboratively with colleagues in cross-agency teams.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, International Development, or a related field. A minimum of 6 years of experience in editing, writing, and managing high-quality written communication projects for both general and specialty audiences is required. Experience with technical and/or complex editorial content is essential, along with a portfolio of written articles that demonstrate the candidate's capabilities. Preferred qualifications include a firm grasp of SEO and search marketing, knowledge of HTML, familiarity with content management/development programs, and experience with multimedia formats such as photo, video, and podcasts. A working knowledge of private-sector fundraising is also advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Journalism, English, Communications, or International Development. This foundational education is essential for understanding the nuances of effective communication and editorial practices necessary for the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 6 years of professional experience in editing, writing, and managing high-quality written communication projects. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with both general and specialized audiences, demonstrating their ability to handle complex editorial content effectively. Experience in producing a diverse range of written materials is crucial for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred, as it enhances the ability to communicate with a broader audience and engage with diverse donor groups.
Additional Notes: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. The Writer/Editor III must be willing to travel up to 15% of the time.
