Job Overview:
The position of Electrical Engineer at CERN involves working within the Systems Department, specifically in the Accelerator Beam Transfer Group (ABT). This group is responsible for the design, development, construction, and operation of beam transfer related equipment. The role requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to develop, install, and commission fast-pulsed systems. The engineer will contribute to ongoing research and development efforts, including innovations in optical fiber sensors and coating technologies. Additionally, the position entails conducting numerical simulations, preparing test setups, performing electrical and RF measurements, and participating in partial discharge testing. The engineer will also be responsible for documenting simulation and experimental results and contributing to scientific publications. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Electrical Engineer will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on the development, installation, and commissioning of fast-pulsed systems.
  • Contributing to ongoing R&D efforts, including working on optical fiber sensors and coating technologies.
  • Conducting numerical simulations using tools such as PSpice and performing electromagnetic and thermal analyses.
  • Preparing test setups and executing electrical and RF measurements.
  • Participating in partial discharge testing to ensure system reliability.
  • Developing and maintaining scripts for post-processing analysis to enhance efficiency.
  • Identifying opportunities for automation within the processes.
  • Documenting simulation and experimental results accurately and contributing to the publication of scientific findings.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a professional background in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or a related field. They should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or a closely related field. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complex principles of electromagnetism and electrical engineering that are critical to the role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant professional experience in electrical engineering or a related field. Specifically, candidates should have 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience if they hold a Master's degree, or up to 3 years of experience if they have a PhD. Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools and analogue circuit simulations is highly desirable, as is familiarity with electrical measurement equipment.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, as this will enhance their ability to work in the multilingual environment at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. The target start date for this role is March 1, 202
  • The job involves working in radiation areas and may require interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is also necessary. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6287 to 6911 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances.
