Job Overview: The consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the Special Representative's mandate to address violence against children in the MENA region. The consultant will also be involved in revamping the Global Pathfinding Global Alliance on Ending Violence Against Children, which aims to stimulate engagement among member states and mobilize action to tackle violence against children. The position requires collaboration with key UN partners and national organizations to develop initiatives, case studies, and advocacy tools, as well as to collect data and prepare reports on child protection issues in the region. Additionally, the consultant will support the planning and organization of high-level regional meetings and provide translation services for various communication materials.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant's duties will include:
Preparing contributions to the annual reporting processes of the Special Representative, focusing on actions taken by national organizations in the MENA region to combat violence against children.
Drafting statements of achievements related to peace and development initiatives.
Translating and interpreting statements and media components into Arabic for advocacy purposes.
Cooperating with UN partners such as UNICEF and WHO to expand collaboration with national organizations in developing initiatives to address violence against children.
Supporting the development of case studies, advocacy tools, and policy reforms for child protection.
Collecting data and information to prepare and update country profiles and reports on child protection issues.
Planning and organizing regional high-level meetings and video conferences.
Coordinating activities with partners in the MENA region.
Providing translation and interpreting services for social media content, press releases, and other communication materials.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, urban studies, social sciences, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related area, with specific experience in child rights and child protection being essential. Knowledge of the Arabic region and the UN system is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as law, political science, international relations, urban studies, or social sciences. In cases where candidates possess a first-level university degree, they must also have qualifying experience that compensates for the lack of an advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in areas related to human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or similar fields. It is essential that candidates have experience specifically in child rights and child protection, as well as familiarity with the Arabic region and the workings of the UN system.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic is mandatory for this position, along with excellent drafting skills. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and knowledge of another official UN language is considered an advantage.
