Job Overview: The position of Radiation Protection Physicist within CERN's CMS team involves providing critical support on radiation protection matters. The role requires taking charge of simulations to evaluate operational scenarios of the detectors and defining necessary shielding. The successful candidate will participate in long shutdown activities as a key member of the field radiation protection team, offering direction and support to various teams involved in the process. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Radiation Protection Physicist include supporting the CMS Technical coordination-team" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Coordination Team in operational matters related to radiation protection during shutdowns. The physicist will contribute to feasibility studies and simulations for shielding options and upgrade planning. They will perform simulations of prompt radiation throughout detectors and caverns, collaborate with HSE-Radio Protection on activation-scenario simulations, and disseminate radiation-simulation results across CMS. Additionally, the physicist will respond to simulation and analysis requests from CMS subsystems, prioritize tasks according to Technical Coordination needs, and maintain and update the CMS nominal FLUKA model. Participation in radiation and activation measurements in the CMS cavern is also required to benchmark the FLUKA module effectively.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Physics, Engineering, or a related field. A radiation protection qualification from a certified body is considered a plus. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of radiation protection, operational dosimetry, and safety planning, along with demonstrated experience in Monte Carlo radiation-transport simulations using FLUKA. Familiarity with radiation measurements and benchmarking is also essential. Technical competencies required include knowledge and application of ionizing radiation, simulation of radiation environments, and instrumentation and measurement techniques. A solid understanding of radiation safety and personal dosimetry is crucial for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field. Candidates must possess a valid driving license and may be required to participate in stand-by duty, shift work, and work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Due to the occupational health risks associated with this position, selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
