Job Overview: The Driver position at UNHCR involves not only driving official vehicles but also maintaining and ensuring the upkeep of the assigned vehicles according to the technical guidance and specifications set by the organization. The incumbent will be supervised by the Administrative Officer or another designated staff member. The Driver will have regular interactions with UNHCR staff and external partners, including government authorities, which necessitates a limited exchange of information. The position is critical in supporting the operational needs of UNHCR, particularly in a complex and challenging environment like North East Syria, where the organization is involved in humanitarian assistance and protection activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver will be responsible for the following duties: driving UNHCR vehicles for the transport of authorized passengers, delivering and collecting documents and other items, and meeting official personnel at airports or other locations while facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required. The Driver must perform day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires, ensuring that the vehicles are roadworthy and maintained to established security standards. The incumbent will also perform minor repairs, arrange for other repairs, and keep the vehicle clean. In case of an accident, the Driver must follow the necessary procedures and ensure valid documentation for passengers and cargo. Additionally, the Driver is expected to log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, and oil changes, and to support the identification and management of risks in their area of responsibility.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience and completion of primary education or a high school diploma. A valid driving license is essential, along with knowledge of driving rules and regulations. The candidate should possess basic vehicle mechanical skills and be able to perform minor repairs. The role also demands a commitment to safety and adherence to UNHCR's core values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.
Educational Background: Candidates must have completed primary education or possess a high school diploma or higher. A valid driving license is also required, and additional certifications related to driving may be beneficial.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least two years of experience as a driver, preferably with experience driving on highways and off-road conditions. Experience working for humanitarian agencies, including UN, INGOs, or national and local NGOs, is highly desirable. Familiarity with international, national, and local roads/routes across Syria is also important.
Languages: Knowledge of English and the UN working language of the duty station is mandatory. For General Service jobs, proficiency in English and/or the UN working language is required, along with knowledge of local languages, particularly Arabic. The expected overall ability in required languages should be at least B2 level.

The role is based in Qamishli, North East Syria, which is currently operating under complex conditions. The incumbent should be prepared to work under challenging circumstances and manage stressful situations. The living conditions in Qamishli may include limited access to medical facilities and varying weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from 2 to 40°C.
