Established to promote WHO's technical cooperation in critical areas such as health system strengthening, public health emergency preparedness, and sustainable recovery, the organization aims to help the government achieve universal health coverage, enhance resilience against health threats, and promote health equity across all populations.

Job Overview:
The National UN Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP) in the Solomon Islands, particularly in the management of P. vivax malaria. The volunteer will work under the clinical and operational supervision of the Clinical Case Manager from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS). The position involves assisting in the introduction of the SD Biosensor Point-of-Care G6PD testing device to provincial health services, ensuring quality assurance in clinical practices, and monitoring and reporting on P. vivax cases. The volunteer will also be responsible for clinical case follow-ups and reporting any adverse events to the Clinical Case Manager. This role is vital in addressing the rising incidence of malaria in the Solomon Islands, which has seen a significant increase in cases over the years, necessitating prompt and effective responses to prevent further health and economic impacts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the NVBDCP Case Management Team in introducing the SD Biosensor Point-of-Care G6PD testing device to provincial health services through structured in-service training and mentoring.
  • Incorporating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) into the revised management protocols for P. vivax at health facilities and outreach response teams.
  • Ensuring quality assurance in clinical practice, case monitoring, reporting, and surveillance of P. vivax cases.
  • Undertaking clinical case follow-ups during and after treatment.
  • Reporting any adverse events to the Clinical Case Manager and following relevant clinical referral pathways as required.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a strong commitment to public health and the ability to work collaboratively with health professionals and community members. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment. A background in health sciences or a related field is preferred, along with a passion for improving health outcomes in underserved populations.

Educational Background:
Candidates should ideally have a degree in health sciences, public health, or a related field. Additional training or certifications in clinical case management or malaria control would be advantageous. A solid understanding of health systems and public health principles is essential for this role.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have prior experience in clinical case management, public health, or a related field. Experience working in a developing country context, particularly in malaria control or vector-borne diseases, is highly desirable. Familiarity with training and mentoring health workers in clinical practices will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the WHO and the primary language used in health communications. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Solomon Islands would be an asset, as it can enhance communication with local communities and health workers.

Additional Notes:
This position is a National UN Volunteer role, which typically involves a commitment to serve for a specified duration, often ranging from six months to one year. The role is full-time and based in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. National UN Volunteers receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) to cover living costs, including rent and food. They are also enrolled in a comprehensive health, life, and disability insurance plan, and receive various grants and leave entitlements as per UN policies. The position may involve travel to provincial health services, and candidates should be prepared for the living conditions in Honiara, which may differ from urban centers in other countries.
