The UN's Development Coordination Office (DCO) plays a crucial role in supporting UN country teams and ensuring effective coordination of development efforts.
Job Overview: The Regional Director position is pivotal in leading the DCO regional teams, which are responsible for providing strategic support to Resident Coordinators (RCs) and UN country teams (UNCTs). The role involves managing the work program and resources of the DCO regional team, ensuring effective collaboration with counterparts in other regions and DCO New York. The Regional Director will guide RCs and UNCTs in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, addressing regional development challenges, and fostering partnerships with external stakeholders. This position requires a strong commitment to the UN's mission and the ability to navigate complex operational environments.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Regional Director will oversee the DCO regional team, manage day-to-day operations, and provide strategic guidance to RCs and UNCTs. Key responsibilities include: directing and managing the work program and resources of the DCO regional team; providing operational backstopping to RC offices; supporting performance management of RCs; advising on emerging regional issues; facilitating engagement with host governments and donors; promoting knowledge exchange among RCs and UNCTs; and ensuring quality control in planning and reporting processes. The Regional Director will also chair the regional Peer Support Group and support the implementation of common operational services initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in international relations, public administration, or related fields, with advanced knowledge of development cooperation. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, planning and organizing skills, client orientation, leadership, and sound judgment. The ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and to engage with diverse stakeholders is essential. Candidates should also exhibit a commitment to gender balance and inclusivity in their work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international relations, public administration, law, social sciences, or a related area is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have over fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in development cooperation management and coordination. A minimum of ten years in leadership roles outside the candidate's country of origin is desired, along with at least five years in international or multi-lateral organizations. Experience in senior management roles within the United Nations and a proven track record in delivering sustainable development results are highly valued. Experience managing multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams is also essential.
Languages: English is required at UN Level II proficiency for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered an asset for this position.
