Job Overview: The Laboratory Technician position is crucial for supporting the UN Health Care Centre's mission to provide safe and effective medical services. The role involves performing technical laboratory functions, ensuring accurate record-keeping, and maintaining laboratory equipment. The Technician will work under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer and will be responsible for the early detection and management of medical conditions through laboratory testing. Duties and Responsibilities: The Laboratory Technician will perform a variety of essential duties, including but not limited to: conducting laboratory tests in areas such as chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, stool examination, immunology, parasitology, and COVID testing; reporting test results according to clinic protocols and alerting healthcare providers about abnormal findings; ensuring compliance with international standards for specimen collection; maintaining accurate records of test results and laboratory materials; performing preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment; calibrating and testing the functionality of medical laboratory instruments; adhering to safety and cleanliness regulations as per OSHA guidelines; managing inventory of reagents and sample collection materials; and following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies for each test conducted. The Technician may also be assigned additional duties as required by the Chief Medical Officer.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Additionally, a minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in a clinical laboratory setting is required. Proficiency in using electronic medical record systems, specifically Earthmed, is essential. Strong computer skills, including full command of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and common internet applications, are also necessary for this role.
Educational Background: The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, which provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for performing laboratory tests and managing laboratory operations effectively. This educational background is critical for ensuring that the Technician can meet the demands of the role and contribute to the overall health services provided by the UN Health Care Centre.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least six years of progressive and responsible experience working in a clinical laboratory environment. This experience should encompass a range of laboratory functions and demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a healthcare setting, ensuring compliance with health regulations and standards.
Languages: Fluency in both oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also required, as it is another working language of the UN. Additionally, proficiency in another official United Nations language would be considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate within the diverse environment of the UN.
