In Malaysia, UNICEF has been active since 1964, focusing on child rights and welfare, and works closely with the Malaysian government to address disparities in child services and rights.

Job Overview:
The UNV Climate and Disaster Data Coordinator will play a crucial role in supporting UNICEF's mission in Malaysia by managing data related to climate and disaster risks affecting children. This position involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including government partners, academia, and youth networks, to develop and implement the Children’s Climate and Disaster Risk Index (CCDRI). The coordinator will be responsible for data management, evidence generation, and program support, ensuring that the data collected is used effectively to advocate for children's rights and improve their well-being in the face of climate change and disasters. The role requires a proactive approach to data analysis and communication, translating complex data into actionable insights for policy and programming.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evidence Generation (30%): Create analytical reports, research notes, and data briefs to inform advocacy and programming efforts.
  • Programme Support (30%): Assist in planning and executing DRR programs, coordinate with partners, and contribute to training and workshops. The coordinator will also be expected to engage in community volunteerism and promote the UN Volunteers program.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of data management and analysis, particularly in the context of climate and disaster risks. Proficiency in using Excel and basic programming tools is essential, along with experience in GIS tools for geospatial analysis. Strong communication skills are required to effectively convey data findings to various stakeholders. The candidate should also exhibit professionalism, integrity, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Educational Background:
A degree in environmental science, data science, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in climate change, disaster risk reduction, or child rights will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in data management, analysis, or research, preferably in the context of climate change, disaster risk reduction, or child welfare. Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, or international organizations is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Proficiency in Malay or other local languages is considered an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local partners and communities.

Additional Notes:
This is a national UN Volunteer position based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The volunteer will be responsible for their own housing and living arrangements. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to UNICEF's mission while gaining valuable experience in a multicultural environment. The volunteer will receive support from UNICEF in terms of induction, mentoring, and access to resources necessary for the role.
