Job Posting Organization:
The position is located within the Housing and Land Management Unit of the Forests, Land and Housing Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The UNECE was established in 1947 and is one of the regional commissions of the United Nations. Its mission is to promote pan-European economic integration and sustainable development. Job Overview:
The Associate Economic Affairs Officer will engage in economic and sector analysis, focusing on development economics, international economics, public economics, and other related fields. The role involves collecting and analyzing socio-economic data, assisting in the design and modification of econometric models, and preparing analytical studies on development issues. The officer will also support intergovernmental processes by preparing project reports and organizing capacity-building initiatives. This position requires a strong understanding of economic theories and their practical applications, as well as the ability to communicate complex economic concepts to non-specialists. The officer will work closely with the UN4UkrainianCities Programme Management Officer and contribute to various projects aimed at enhancing economic development in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Associate Economic Affairs Officer include:
  • Conducting economic and sector analysis by collecting, evaluating, and interpreting statistics and qualitative information from various sources.
  • Assisting in the design, testing, and operation of econometric models.
  • Preparing briefing notes and inputs for speeches on economic issues.
  • Drafting components of analytical studies on development policies.
  • Organizing and servicing expert group meetings and seminars on development issues.
  • Preparing inputs for project reports and summarizing project-related meetings.
  • Compiling and analyzing data for technical cooperation project proposals.
  • Preparing documentation for technical cooperation programs and monitoring their implementation.
  • Performing administrative tasks necessary for the delivery of the work unit’s services. 1
  • Engaging in training activities to enhance personal and team capabilities. 1
  • Utilizing data visualization methods to present insights and trends effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of economic theories and their applications. They should demonstrate the ability to conduct research, analyze data, and write comprehensive reports. Professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender perspectives in economic work are essential. The candidate should also exhibit teamwork skills, creativity in problem-solving, and technological awareness to apply relevant tools in their work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in economics or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level degree (Bachelor’s) in the specified fields, combined with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, or related areas is required. Experience in preparing and delivering workshops and capacity-building initiatives is desirable, as is experience in applying development economics in conflict areas. Familiarity with the UN Common System or similar organizations is also advantageous.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is considered desirable, also requiring a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in all language skills.

The appointment is limited to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and is classified as a fixed-term appointment. Renewal of the appointment is contingent upon the continued existence of the mandate and availability of funding.
