Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN's mission is to provide insights into the fundamental laws of nature through high-energy particle collisions, which occur at close to the speed of light. The organization is known for its collaborative environment and operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, with a diverse workforce that reflects its commitment to inclusivity and diversity since its foundation.
Job Overview: The Electrical engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Technical Engineer will play a crucial role within the Electrical Safety Project team at CERN, focusing on the electrical safety management of the CERN accelerators. This position involves conducting electrical risk analyses, defining mitigation measures, and managing intervention processes to ensure compliance with electrical safety requirements. The engineer will be responsible for overseeing the network separations of the CERN accelerators and will need to collate, organize, and centralize relevant documents and data pertaining to electrical safety. This role requires close collaboration with various groups responsible for the main systems of the accelerators, ensuring that all safety standards are applied effectively. The engineer will also be tasked with gathering and verifying on-site data related to the accelerators' powering circuits, which is essential for maintaining operational safety and efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform comprehensive electrical risk analyses and define associated mitigation measures to enhance safety protocols.
Request electrical lockouts of equipment and issue work authorizations in strict compliance with established electrical safety requirements.
Manage the network separations of the CERN accelerators to ensure safe operational practices.
Collate, organize, and centralize all documents and data relevant to electrical safety, establishing effective communication with the groups responsible for the main systems of the accelerators.
Gather on-site data, verify, and update documentation related to the powering circuits of the accelerators in collaboration with concerned groups.
Liaise with the Accelerator and Technology Sector (ATS) groups to facilitate the application of appropriate safety standards within the organization.
Participate in the development and implementation of safety training and awareness programs for staff involved in electrical operations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Additionally, confirmed experience in electrical distribution network operation (both high voltage and low voltage) and electrical risk management is essential. Familiarity with occupational safety and risk management, particularly in qualitative and quantitative electrical risk assessment, is required. Candidates should also have a solid understanding of the operation and maintenance of electrical circuits and networks, as well as knowledge of EU regulations and national legislation pertaining to electrical work and operations in France and Switzerland.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field is mandatory for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. The educational background should ideally include coursework or training in electrical safety, risk management, and the operation of electrical systems.
Experience: Candidates should have confirmed experience in the operation of electrical distribution networks, including both high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) systems. Experience in electrical risk management and lock-out procedures is also required. The ideal candidate will have a background that includes practical experience in managing electrical safety within complex operational environments, particularly in research or industrial settings.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the primary working language at CERN. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for effective communication within the organization and with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for a period of 4 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role may involve work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license. Stand-by duty may be required based on the needs of the organization. The job grade for this position is classified as 4-5, and the job reference is EN-ACE-AQS-2025-253-LD.
