With a team of over 30 professionals based in Geneva and an annual budget exceeding 5 million USD, IDMC monitors more than 130 countries worldwide, offering verified and consolidated estimates of individuals who are internally displaced or at risk of displacement due to conflict, violence, disasters, and development projects. The organization complements its global data with interdisciplinary research into the drivers, patterns, and impacts of internal displacement, providing tailored advice and support to inform policy-making at global, regional, and national levels. IDMC's data and evidence are published on its website and through its Global Internal Displacement Database, with its flagship report, the Global Report on Internal Displacement, being published annually in May, serving as the world reference for IDP statistics and analyses.
Job Overview: The Data Coordinator role at IDMC involves implementing methodologies for monitoring internal displacement related to conflict and disaster specifically for the East & Southern Africa sub-region. Duties and Responsibilities: The Data Coordinator will have a variety of duties and responsibilities, including: monitoring and analyzing internal displacement caused by conflict, violence, and disasters in East & Southern Africa; uploading data on internal displacement into the IDMC database while ensuring adherence to standards for frequency, consistency, and accuracy; contributing to the analysis of displacement trends in the sub-region; assisting in the technical development of IDMC's monitoring tools; maintaining and expanding IDMC's network of partners in the region; supporting efforts to strengthen partners' capacities for monitoring and analyzing internal displacement; and providing support for institutional projects as necessary. The role requires a proactive approach to data management and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure effective monitoring and response to internal displacement issues.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a detailed-oriented and collaborative mindset, with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in research, data collection, and quantitative data analysis. Demonstrated experience working with databases and information management systems is essential. A solid understanding of the East & Southern Africa sub-region and operational experience related to conflict or disaster-induced displacement is required. Candidates should also have experience in processing, reviewing, and uploading large datasets, along with strong analytical skills to produce concise analytical products. Additional qualifications include a Master's degree in international affairs, social sciences, displacement, migration, humanitarian or development studies, information science, statistics, or a related field. Candidates should be highly organized, capable of conducting desk reviews of secondary literature, and have significant experience in maintaining relationships with various institutions and technical sectors.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in relevant fields such as international affairs, social sciences, displacement, migration, humanitarian or development studies, information science, statistics, or a related area. Additional Notes: This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and is offered as a national contract for 12 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability.
