Job Overview:
This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) in Montreal, which is administered by UNEP. The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer for Planning, Monitoring, Reporting and Reviewing and the Programme Management Officer for National Reports, Monitoring, Review and National Reporting Unit, Implementation Support Division. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in the field of biodiversity and environmental policy, particularly in relation to the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The intern will assist with various tasks related to the planning, monitoring, reporting, and review of the implementation of this framework, contributing to the overall goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will have a range of responsibilities, including: reviewing and analyzing updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), national targets, national reports, and other relevant documents provided by Parties to contribute to related documentation or analyses for major meetings under the Convention. The intern will assist with the facilitation of submissions of updated NBSAPs and national reports, support the organization and preparation of related meetings, including logistical support, note-taking, and report preparation. Additionally, the intern may assist in other duties as requested by the supervisor or the Executive Secretary, providing a comprehensive support role within the unit.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, candidates should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
The preferred area of study for internship candidates includes fields such as international sustainable development, international environmental policy, public finance and development planning, biodiversity-related or environmental sciences. Candidates can be students currently undertaking studies or having completed studies at the PhD, MBA, or 4th Year Undergraduate level, or any graduate program relevant to the internship.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, it is essential that their field of study is closely related to the type of internship they are applying for. Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme, or have completed such programs.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language, such as Spanish or French, is desirable. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding), while knowledge is defined as a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
