Job Overview: The Unit Head for Occupational Radiation Protection will lead the IAEA's policy and program development in the area of radiation protection for workers. This role involves coordinating a specialized program within a multilateral environment, where the Unit Head will need to navigate diverse perspectives and find practical solutions to complex issues. The position requires extensive knowledge and experience in occupational radiation protection, as well as the ability to manage and implement programs effectively. The Unit Head will also serve as a senior specialist, providing guidance and advice to high-level regulators and operators in member states, and will be responsible for promoting the IAEA's vision and mission in this area. The role includes facilitating cooperation with other organizations and departments within the IAEA, ensuring that the organization's objectives are met on a global scale.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Unit Head will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the IAEA's occupational radiation protection program. Key responsibilities include planning and coordinating the work of the Unit to meet program objectives, supervising and developing staff, promoting the application of IAEA safety standards through technical assistance and education, and coordinating the IAEA Occupational Radiation Protection Appraisal Service (ORPAS). The Unit Head will also collaborate with international organizations, particularly the International Labour Organization (ILO), to ensure a harmonized approach to occupational radiation protection. Additional duties include leading the IAEA's involvement in the Information System on Occupational Exposure in Medicine, Industry, and Research (ISEMIR), maintaining the IAEA webpage for the Occupational Radiation Protection Network (ORPNET), and building partnerships across various work areas to ensure coherence and synergy in related programs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in radiation safety or physical sciences, or a related field. A Bachelor's degree may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree if accompanied by two additional years of relevant working experience. At least 10 years of experience in occupational radiation protection is required, with a minimum of five years at a managerial level. Candidates should have experience in developing safety standards, applying these standards, and managing occupational radiation protection services. Proven experience in leading teams and managing large national or international projects is essential, as is participation in international conferences related to occupational radiation protection.
Educational Background: A Master's Degree in radiation safety or physical sciences is required. A Bachelor's degree in relevant fields with additional experience may be accepted. The educational background should be complemented by extensive knowledge of occupational radiation protection principles and practices.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 10 years of experience in the field of occupational radiation protection, with at least five years in a managerial role. Experience should encompass all areas of occupational radiation protection, including the development and application of safety standards and the management of related services. Active participation in international forums and conferences is also required, along with experience in applying international safety standards in developing countries being an asset.
Languages: Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.
