Job Overview:
The Communications Specialist will play a crucial role in leading WFP’s media engagement strategy with UK-based media outlets. This position is vital for raising awareness and garnering support for WFP’s mission among UK stakeholders, including the government, media, and the public. The consultant will be responsible for developing a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with WFP’s global objectives, managing media relations, and creating tailored content for both UK and global audiences. The role requires a dynamic individual who can effectively communicate WFP’s impact and engage with various stakeholders to enhance the organization’s visibility and support in the UK. The consultant will also collaborate closely with the UK Government communications team and high-profile supporters to amplify WFP’s message and mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Specialist will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
  • Developing and implementing a UK communications strategy that aligns with WFP’s global priorities.
  • Cultivating and expanding relationships with UK-based journalists and media outlets to enhance WFP’s visibility.
  • Monitoring and analyzing the UK media landscape to identify trends and opportunities for proactive engagement.
  • Organizing media interviews, press briefings, and journalist engagement activities.
  • Drafting press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and talking points to effectively communicate WFP’s mission.
  • Producing compelling storytelling assets that highlight WFP’s impact and adapting content for various digital platforms.
  • Leading relations with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to amplify the visibility of UK-funded WFP programs.
  • Developing content that showcases the impact of UK aid through WFP, including stories from the field and social media packages.
  • Supporting the involvement of WFP Goodwill Ambassadors and high-profile supporters in promoting WFP’s objectives. 1
  • Tracking and reporting on media coverage and engagement metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communications initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, or a related field. An advanced university degree is desirable but not essential. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in media, communications, or public information, with a strong understanding of the UK media landscape and experience in media relations and press engagement. Experience working with government stakeholders and coordinating celebrity or high-profile supporter engagement is also desirable. Candidates should demonstrate excellent writing skills and the ability to develop strategic communications materials.

Educational Background:
The position requires a first degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, or a related field. While an advanced university degree is preferred, it is not mandatory. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in communication strategies, media relations, and public engagement.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in media, communications, or public information. Experience in the humanitarian or development sector is highly desirable, as is a proven track record of working with government stakeholders and managing media relations. Familiarity with celebrity and influencer engagement is also beneficial, as the role involves collaboration with high-profile supporters to promote WFP’s mission.

Languages:
Full fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to WFP’s operations or stakeholder engagement in the UK.

This position is a consultant role at CST level II, with a contract duration of 11 months. The role is based in London, UK, and is full-time.
