Job Overview: The Principal Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in the Environmental and Sustainability Division of the EBRD. This position involves working closely with Associate Directors, Heads of Sector, and Directors to ensure that the Bank's commitments under its Environmental and Social Policy are met. The Principal will be responsible for the environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's diverse portfolio of projects, which may include complex and high-risk initiatives. The role requires a deep understanding of environmental and social risks, climate change impacts, and green finance, as well as the ability to contribute specialist input to various projects and sectors. The Principal will also be expected to coordinate project teams, conduct technical reviews, and represent the ESD at various forums, ensuring that the Bank's environmental and social commitments are upheld and communicated effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Principal will have a wide range of responsibilities, including providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation initiatives, managing delivery of specific sub-projects, and contributing to the assessment of compliance with Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). The role involves coordinating project and consultant teams, conducting analytical and technical reviews, developing methodologies, and monitoring project outputs and outcomes. The Principal will also prepare internal and external reports, represent the ESD at meetings, and support capacity-building initiatives. Additionally, the Principal will mentor junior staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes related to environmental and social assessments. The position requires independent travel as necessary and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks is essential, along with knowledge of international environmental and social standards and guidelines. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies of international financial institutions is also required. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and excellent time management and organizational skills are critical for success in this role. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex issues effectively to diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized certifications in environmental management, social impact assessment, or related disciplines would be advantageous and may enhance a candidate's qualifications for this position.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in environmental and social risk assessment, project management, and leading multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in negotiating and influencing stakeholders, as well as mentoring and coaching less experienced staff, is also important. A track record of working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments and delivering solutions-oriented approaches is essential for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with one or more languages of the EBRD countries of operation is advantageous, and for positions based in resident offices, local language fluency will be required.
